Seaside High School basketball team raises money for cancer care at Providence Seaside High School’s basketball team is not only back-to-back state champs, but war- riors in the fight against cancer, Providence Seaside reported. The team sold cancer awareness T-shirts during the season to sup- port their team manager, Mathew Carpenter, whose mother Renae died of cancer last year. The team also raffled off a framed shirt, signed by all the players that included a pic- ture of the team and a piece of the net from the championship game. In all, $2,791 was raised and donated to the Providence Seaside Foundation’s cancer fund, which provides care bags to ease the way for patients during treatment. Valiants win league title, Gulls tie for second From left to right, Sea- side’s Connor Merrell, Mason Shamion, Curtis Kunde, Jackson Kunde and Samson Sibony. The Daily Astorian BANKS — For the first time since 2003, Cowapa League boys golf has a champion other than Scappoose or Seaside. Valley Catholic won this year’s league tournament, as the Valiants shot a 318 team score Monday at Quail Val- ley Golf Course. The Indians and Gulls finished in a second-place tie at 331. It was the second time this season that the two teams tied in a tournament. Both times, the Gulls won the poten- tial tiebreaker with a better fifth score, as Mason Shamion shot an 87 to outscore the Indians’ fifth man, who had a 93. Banks finished fourth with a 356, followed by Astoria (377). Tillamook did not field a complete team, although Tillamook’s Carter Lee defended his JIM POETSCH/ FOR THE DAILY ASTORIAN Cowapa League medalist title (his third) by shooting 77. Chase Elliott of Scappoose tied with Valley Catholic’s Peter Boileau and Cole Schmidlin for second place, one stroke behind Lee. There was a four-way tie for fifth at 81, with Seaside senior Jackson Kunde, Jake Gray of Scappoose and Valley Catholic’s Cole Heinsen and Andrew Plambeck. Rounding out the all-league team was a tie for ninth with Seaside freshman Curtis Kunde and Banks’ Liam Birr. Curtis Kunde is the first freshman to earn all-league for Sea- side since Joel Bletscher in 2003. Dylan Althiede-Nielsen and Con- ner Long each shot 92 to lead Astoria. Taylor Palmberg added a 95. “This was a very competitive tournament,” said Seaside coach Jim Poetsch. “As I’ve said all year, Valley Catholic is the team to beat this year. They now have beaten us four times, but we are closing the gap. We are also very close with Scappoose, each of us winning once and ending up tied the other two times we played. “On the individual side, every one of our players shot a score that would be good enough to get on the all-league team in most years,” he said. “But this isn’t most years. The Cowapa is a very tough league.” Jackson Kunde made the all-league team for the third year. “He was able to complete his round today with nothing worse than a bo- gey,” Poetsch said. “His brother Curtis only had one double-bogey and was able to offset it by chipping in for birdie on the second hole.” BASEBALL GARY HENLEY/SEASIDE SIGNAL PAYTON WESTERHOLM Baseball In a four-game span, the Gulls defeated all three teams ahead of themselves in the Cowapa League standings. In a 7-3 win at Astoria (April 25), Westerholm was 4-for-5 at the plate with two doubles, scored twice and drove in two runs. Two days later, he was the winning pitcher in a come- from-behind 7-6 victory at Scap- poose. He scattered four hits over 5.1 innings, with seven strikeouts and two walks. In a 7-2 win at Til- lamook May 4, Westerholm had two doubles and four RBIs. SOFTBALL Banks blanks Seaside, 10-0 Seaside Signal Banks built a quick 5-0 lead Mon- day, on its way to a 10-0 Cowapa League baseball win over Seaside at Broadway Field. The Braves collected 11 hits, while Banks starter Blake Gobel silenced the Seaside bats to help the Braves remain in a first-place tie with Astoria. Gobel had just one strikeout, but he had the Seaside batters off-balance and hitting lots of fly balls. The Gulls had four base hits, while Gobel walked one and threw six solid innings (59 pitch- es) before giving way to Tyler Lilly in the seventh. Meanwhile, the Braves scored two runs in the first and added three in the second, highlighted by a two-run sin- gle from Dakota Bunn. Hayden Vandehey had three singles for Banks, and also drove in three runs. Seaside pitchers Payton Wester- holm and Gage McFadden combined for three strikeouts and four walks. A pair of double plays helped the Gulls get out of a couple jams, but the Braves also turned two double plays, including one in the sixth when the first two Seaside batters reached base. Gulls 7, Mooks 2 TILLAMOOK — Four runs in the second inning was all Seaside needed May 4, in a 7-2 Cowapa League base- ball win at Tillamook. Pitchers Brayden Johnson and Gage McFadden allowed just five hits, with Johnson pitching six innings to pick up the win. The Gulls had eight hits off two Tillamook pitchers, including a 3-for-4 effort for Payton Westerholm, who had two doubles and drove in four runs. Dawson Blanchard was 2-for-4 with a double, while the Gulls were hit by pitch four times. Gulls 6, Valiants 5 The seventh inning of a Seaside baseball game is always exciting, as it was May 2 at Broadway Field. After Valley Catholic scored three runs in the top of the seventh to tie the game, the Gulls scored one in the bot- tom of the seventh to win, 6-5. Lady Gulls fall to Tillamook Seaside Signal Tillamook scored seven runs in the top of the first inning May 3, as the Cheesemakers scored a 9-2 win over Seaside in a Cowapa League softball game at Broad- way Field. Tillamook committed six er- rors in the field, but made up for it with 11 hits, including five for extra bases. Pitcher Hannah Nelson did the rest, as the Tillamook freshman scattered six hits with two strike- outs and a walk. Kandice Flaigg had two hits for Seaside, which was playing its third game in three days. Viola Soprano had a double, while Bri Hill and Flaigg scored the two runs for the Gulls. Seaside’s Jetta Ideue relieved starter Gracie Rhodes in the first inning, and struck out nine with three walks. One day earlier, Valley Catho- lic scored a 9-8 win over the Gulls in Beaverton. Seaside began its three-games- in-three-days stretch with a 10-0 loss at Scappoose May 1. Scappoose pitcher Nicole Dougherty tossed a no-hitter, striking out 10 with no walks and no hits allowed.
