10A FRIDAY April 27, 2018 Spring Sports SeasideSignal.com Athletes BASEBALL OF THE WEEK GULLS BEAT BRAVES IN 11 INNINGS By Gary Henley Seaside Signal F or the second time in three days, the Banks and Seaside baseball teams went extra innings. And the Gulls scored a little pay- back April 19, scoring a 6-5, 11-inning win on the Braves’ home field. Two days earlier, Banks defeated Seaside 8-3 in eight innings at Broadway Field. In the rematch, the Gulls grabbed a 3-0 lead in the second inning, before the Braves rallied with a run in the fourth, and two apiece in the fifth and sixth for a 5-3 advan- tage. Seaside tied it with two runs in the top of the seventh. After a scoreless eighth, ninth and 10th, the Gulls rallied in the 11th, with Gage Mc- Fadden scoring on a wild pitch for the go- ahead run. McFadden was 3-for-6 to lead Seaside’s 10-hit attack, and also retired the Braves in the bottom of the 11th to pick up the win on the mound. After a one-out single to right in the top of the 11th, McFadden took third on an error and scored on a wild pitch. WILLAMETTE UNVIERSITY PHOTO SAM HINTON Golf Now a junior at Willamette University, Hinton (Seaside High School, Class of 2015) sank a 25- foot birdie putt on the second playoff hole to take first place at the 2018 Northwest Conference Tournament in men’s golf April 22 at Oakbrook Golf Club. Hin- ton shot a tournament-low 69 in the first round and a 74 in the second round. His 2-under 69 was the only sub-par round of the tournament. Braves 8, Gulls 3 SEASIDE — It took eight innings and three different sports, but the Banks Braves finally got a win in Seaside. Earlier this school year, the Braves brought top five teams to the coast in football and boys basketball, only to come up short to the Gulls in both sports. The third sport was the charm for Banks, which scored five runs in the top of the eighth inning for an 8-3 victory over Seaside, April 17 at Broadway Field. Still, it was nearly another defeat for the Braves. Leading 3-1, Banks pitcher Hayden Van- dehey took a no-hitter into the fifth inning, when Seaside’s Payton Westerholm reached on an error with one out. Duncan Thompson broke up the no-hitter with an infield single, and Isaias Jantes drew a walk to load the bases. The senior had driven in the Gulls’ first run in the first inning with a sacrifice fly. And he drove in the tying runs in the fifth. Following the walk to Jantes, Landwehr sin- gled to left field to score Westerholm and Thompson to knot the game at 3-3. Landwehr came up big again in the top of the sixth. With two outs and a Banks runner at second, Blake Gobel’s fly ball to shallow right was caught by a diving Landwehr to end the inning. The Gulls had an opportunity to end it in the bottom of the seventh, loading the bases GRETCHEN HOEKSTRE Track with two outs, before Thomas Cook — on in relief of Vandehey — struck out the final batter to end the inning. The Braves took advantage of their new life in the top of the eighth. Vandehey led off with a single, Tyler Lil- ly reached on a bunt and Blaine Herb walked to load the bases with no outs. And that’s when the floodgates opened. Vandehey scored on a wild pitch, pinch-hit- ter Dalton Renne drove in Lilly, an infield single by Hayden Gobel brought in Herb, and a bases loaded walk forced in another run. GOLF The junior is the top-ranked thrower in the state at the 4A level, in both the shot put and discus. She had a personal best toss of 43 feeet, 4 inches in the Banks Invitational April 21, and also won the discus event. Her mark in the shot put broke a 31-year-old school record by al- most four feet. Tracie Earl held the previous mark of 39-4¾, set in 1987. SOFTBALL Seaside boys third at Banks Invite Braves defeat Gulls, twice in the top 10 with an 86, followed by Curtis Kunde (88), Connor Merrell (90) and Mason Shamion (91). “We looked really good on the front today,” Gulls’ coach Jim Po- etsch said. “Out of 53 golfers, we had all five of our guys in the top 14. Jackson was sitting in second place at the turn at one over par, Connor was in ninth and Mason, Samson and Curtis were all just outside the top 10. “We were eight back of Valley and on our way to our best score of the year,” he said. “But as good as we were on the front, we were about as bad on the back. Two days after hav- ing only two blowup holes against Scappoose, we had 22 today. I’m not sure what happened on the back but we are much better than we showed in the last nine holes.” Seaside Signal BANKS — The Seaside boys golf team struggled on the back nine April 18 at Quail Valley Golf Course, where the Gulls ultimately finished third in the Banks Invita- tional. Seaside was just a few strokes be- hind Valley Catholic after the front nine, but the Gulls couldn’t keep pace with the Valiants or Scappoose. Valley Catholic carded a 312 to win the tournament, ahead of Scap- poose (336) and Seaside (346). Astoria was a distant fourth in the 10-team tournament with a 380. Tillamook’s Carter Lee shot two-under par 70 to earn medalist honors. Seaside’s Jackson Kunde finished seventh with an 82 while teammate Samson Sibony finished Lady Gulls Invitational Seaside Signal GEARHART — Twenty-one var- sity golfers braved the elements April 16 at Gearhart Golf Links. Then again, that’s what golfers on the North Coast usually have to do this time of year. Six teams showed up for Seaside Invitational girls golf tournament, where the Lady Gulls hosted three other Cowapa League schools, along with golfers from Ilwaco and Wahkia- kum. In between numerous rain showers and wind gusts, Scappoose managed to score the team victory. Under the Stableford scoring system, the Indians compiled 161 points to finish ahead of Astoria (125), Ilwaco (118) and Sea- side (80). Tillamook and Wahkiakum did not have enough golfers to score in the team standings. BANKS — After winning eight of their first nine games, the Seaside softball has cooled off, as Banks pounded out 27 hits in a 28-3 win over the Gulls in Cowapa League softball action April 20. It was the third straight loss for Seaside, which trailed 22-1 after just three innings. The Gulls fin- ished with 10 hits, but committed six errors. Noel Herb was 4-for-5 with four RBIs to lead Banks. Braves 16, Gulls 4 SEASIDE — Banks collected 17 hits in a 16-4 win over Seaside, in a Cowapa League softball game April 19 at Broadway Field. The Gulls were coming off a 12-2 loss at Tillamook the night before, but still trailed the No. 4-ranked Braves by just 6-4 after three innings. Banks scored two runs in the fourth, added a run in the fifth, then put the game away with seven runs in the sixth. Mackenzie Davis was 4-for-4 and scored four runs for the Braves. Jetta Ideue had three of Seaside’s seven hits. Mooks 12, Gulls 2 TILLAMOOK — Tillamook racked up 15 hits and shocked Sea- side 12-2 in a Cowapa League soft- ball game April 12, as the Cheese- makers handed the Gulls their first loss in league play.
