10A FRIDAY April 13, 2018 Spring Sports SeasideSignal.com Athletes BOYS GOLF OF THE WEEK BIG SEASON CONTINUES FOR SEASIDE BOYS GOLF By Gary Henley Seaside Signal R EDMOND — There’s a long way to go, but the race for the state cham- pionship in 4A boys golf will likely come down to one of three schools from the Cowapa League. The battle on the golf course between Scappoose, Seaside and Valley Catholic will be a fun one to watch, as it was at the “Ra- ven Rumble,” April 6 at Eagle Crest Ridge Course in Redmond. Summit — the defending 5A state cham- pions — won the event with a 309 team score, ahead of Valley Catholic (321). Class 5A Bend (334) took third, while Scappoose and Seaside tied for fourth at 349. Seaside’s fifth golfer, Curtis Kunde, had a better score (93) than the fifth golfer from Scappoose (Jack Eggers, 96), to break the tie. Ridgeview’s Isaac Berger, playing on his home course, and Summit’s William Fleck tied for medalist honors at 73. Seaside’s Jackson Kunde finished a stroke away from a top 10 finish with an 80. He was followed by teammates Connor Merrell and Mason Shamion (each with an 89) and Samson Si- bony (91). “We came here to see where we stand among the best teams, and we fared pretty well,” said Seaside coach Jim Poetsch. “Val- ley Catholic looked pretty good today, but we were able to beat the rest of the 4A schools, including the defending state champions. “We still have some work to do, but I can see us being quite a bit better by season’s end,” he said. “We only had two birdies today. Mason (Shamion) and Samson (Si- bony) both birdied the fourth hole, and we still competed well. If we can limit our big scores — we still had too many today — and throw in a few more birdies, we could be re- ally good.” SEASIDE HIGH SCHOOL PHOTO TRIPLE PLAY Baseball On March 30 at Madras, Sea- side held a 6-4 lead going into the bottom of the fifth, when Madras had runners at first and second with no outs and the heart of their order at the plate. A bunt was attempted off Sea- side pitcher Payton Westerholm, who made a diving catch near the first base line. Westerholm fired the ball to Ashton Boyd at first for the second out, and Boyd delivered to Gage McFad- den at second to complete the 1-3-6 triple play. The three play- ers also combined for three hits and four runs scored in the 7-4 win. In his 21st year as the Sea- side coach, it was the first triple play by the Gulls that Joel Dier- ickx has witnessed. GARY HENLEY/SEASIDE SIGNAL Jackson Kunde has been leading the Gulls in every match so far in the 2018 season. Gulls defeat Astoria He nearly followed it up with another ea- gle as his second shot on the third hole hit the pin. Kunde also had birdies on the eighth and 12th holes. Shamion also had birdies on No. 2 and No. 15. Curtis Kunde added the only other birdie for the Gulls, on the sixth hole. “It was great seeing all five guys shoot in the 80s or lower today,” said Seaside coach Jim Poetsch. “The last time we did that was in the 2015 state tournament. We did a better job today of limiting our ‘blow-up’ holes. “For some reason we struggled on No. 9 today, shooting two triples and two double bogeys, but otherwise we did a pretty good job of limiting damage.” He added, “I think we had one other tri- ple and maybe a handful of doubles from the other 85 holes we played. Other than Jack- son’s eagle, nobody did anything spectacu- lar. We just played solid golf.” WARRENTON — It was a Clatsop Clash on the Course April 3, as Astoria hosted Sea- side in a Cowapa League dual golf match at the Astoria Golf & Country Club. The Gulls scored a season-low score and improved to 1-1 in Cowapa League play with a 333-375 victory. Seaside’s Jackson Kunde was medalist with a 78. Teammate Connor Merrell fin- ished second with an 84, followed by Sea- side’s Curtis Kunde (third, 85), Samson Si- bony (fourth, 86) and Mason Shamion (fifth, 89) Taylor Palmberg had Astoria’s top score with a 92. Jackson Kunde provided the highlight of the day for the Gulls, driving the green on the par four second hole and making his putt for an eagle.
