FINAL FOUR SEMIFINALS Win over Mazama sent Gulls to Final Four By Gary Henley EO Media Group FOREST GROVE — In the first of three games in three days, and the Seaside boys bas- ketball team took step one Thursday, March 8, in Forest Grove, where they cruised to a 51- 44 win over Mazama in a Class 4A quarterfi- nal game at Forest Grove High School. Seaside struggled offensively for a half, then pulled away in the third quarter and held off a late challenge by the Vikings, as all eyes were on the defending state champions in Thursday’s last game. For the third year in a row, it was on to the Final Four for Seaside. The Gulls split two games with Newport in the regular season. The Cubs scored a rare win at Seaside in the Holiday Classic, before the Gulls got revenge with a 64-63 win at Newport Jan. 5. As for Thursday’s win, the Gulls picked up where they left off following last week’s 43- 32 win over Gladstone, involving themselves in a low-scoring, defensive battle. An offen- sive rebound basket by Colton Carter gave Seaside an early 9-2 lead, and Chase Januik’s 3-pointer to end the first quarter had Seaside in front, 12-6. Even fewer points in the second period ended with the Gulls leading at half- time, 20-10. Carter added another score and Januik’s drive to the hoop in the closing seconds gave Seaside the 10-point lead. The offense ran a little smoother for the Gulls in the second half. A jump shot by Ryan Hague, a 3-pointer from Beau Johnson and a Januik jumper gave Seaside a 27-16 lead mid- way through the third quarter. A triple from Brayden Johnson and a three-point play the hard way by Payton Westerholm at the 2:00 mark basically put the game away, at 35-20. Mazama made a late run in the fourth quarter, but never threatened the Seaside lead. Trailing by two, Valley Catho- lic missed a 3-point attempt before fouling Westerholm with five sec- onds left, leading to Westerholm’s two clinching points. Seaside did not set any scoring records this postseason, but their defense came to the rescue, allow- ing an average of just 43 points in four playoff games. “At the start of the year, I thought we were more of an of- fensive team,” Januik said. “But towards the end and the start of the playoffs, it felt like we turned into the best defensive team in the state. Everyone just stepped up their game, and as a defense, we just be- came unstoppable.” With four of their five starters returning next season, the Gulls will be heavily favored to win it all next year as well. Only time will tell how many more state titles this group will win. Keep in mind that Seaside has one of the stron- gest youth programs in the state, so there’s more talent on the way. “We’ve built the program from the ground up, the kids know how to win, and we’re going to be good for a while,” coach Westerholm said. Januik delivered a strong mes- sage to rest of the 4A world after the game: “We’re going to be bet- ter than ever next year. We’ll be looking for a three-peat.” For now, sit back and enjoy the ride, Seaside. These are your Glory Years. In Friday’s semifinal, the Gulls had to ral- ly from a 33-27 halftime deficit, and did so by outscoring Newport 14-9 in the third quarter, fol- lowed by a 9-1 run to start the fourth. Payton Westerholm scored his first points of the night early in the fourth period to give Sea- side a 43-42 lead. Moments later, Chase Januik scored his first basket of the game for a 45-42 advantage, and the Gulls never trailed again. Westerholm added a 3-pointer, and Seaside turned a 39-36 third quarter deficit into 52-43 lead midway through the fourth, following a 16-4 run. The Cubs made a late rally and pulled to with- in 53-52 on a short jumper by Kye Blaser with 27 seconds left, but Januik drained a pair of free throws with 17 seconds remaining, and teammate Beau Johnson made 1-of-2 for the final point. Seaside’s Ryan Hague scored 11 points in the first quarter, on his way to a 23-point night. After they were both held scoreless through three quarters, Januik and Westerholm combined for 15 points in the fourth. Newport outshot Seaside (46 percent to 39 percent) and the Cubs outrebounded the Gulls 36-29, but Newport had 23 turnovers to Seaside’s nine.
