OF THE WEEK
LADY GULLS POUND
CHEESEMAKERS
By Gary Henley
Seaside Signal
S
easide pulled into a third-place tie
with Astoria in the Cowapa League
standings, with a 52-32 win over
Tillamook in a Cowapa League girls
basketball game Jan. 26 at the Gulls’ Nest.
The Gulls were just 9-of-19 at the free
throw line and 1-for-12 on 3-pointers, but
they still managed the 20-point win over the
Cheesemakers, who fall to 3-14 overall, 0-4
in league.
“Other than a stretch in the second
quarter, we played solidly,” said Seaside
coach Mike Hawes, whose team is now
2-2 in league play. “The third quarter we
switched to man (defense) and widened the
halftime score to a fairly comfortable margin
(39-22). We are getting better, but Banks will
test us (Tuesday) to see how much better.”
Bryre Babbitt poured in a game-high
17 points, followed by Jetta Ideue with 15.
Babbitt also had five rebounds, three assists
and three steals, while Seaside had three
players (Gretchen Hoekstre, Ruby Davis and
Ideue) with eight rebounds apiece.
“Jetta and Bryre were great from start to
finish,” Hawes said. “And our bigs played
well — Gretchen, Anesha (Smart) and
Ruby.”
Valiants 49, Lady Gulls 37
BEAVERTON — Seaside bounced
back from a tough loss at Astoria with a
solid effort Jan. 23 at Valley Catholic, but
the sixth-ranked Valiants escaped with the
victory, 49-37.
The Cowapa League girls basketball
showdown was much closer than the score
indicated.
Following their 36-turnover loss against
the Fishermen, the Gulls came out and took
a 19-17 halftime lead against the Valiants.
And Seaside held leads throughout the game,
including a 30-24 advantage late in the third
period.
Emy Kiser, Annaka Garhofer and Bryre
Babbitt all drained 3-pointers in the third for
the Lady Gulls, for a 33-31 lead going into
the final quarter.
But the Valiants rallied behind a pair of
3-point shots by Noelle Mannen, and Callie
Kawaguchi did the rest from the free throw
line, as Valley Catholic finished the contest
on an 18-4 run.
Mannen led all scorers with 23 points,
followed by Kawaguchi with 15. Kiser
scored nine for Seaside before fouling out,
along with Jetta Ideue.

high 17 points for the Lady Gulls,
in a 52-32 win over Tillamook
Jan. 26. She also had five re-
bounds, three assists and three

to 2-2 in league play.

Astoria 41, Lady Gulls 30
It was a night of jump balls, fouls,
free throws and turnovers. But with their
41-30 win over Seaside, the Astoria
girls basketball team still accomplished
two important goals Jan. 19 — the Lady
Fishermen avoided an 0-2 start in league
play, and their victory at the Brick House
was the first over the Gulls in almost six
years.
The Astoria girls finally brought an
end to one of the longest Clatsop Clash
droughts, scoring their first win over
Seaside since Feb. 10, 2012 to break an 11-
game losing streak to the Gulls.
Astoria coach Mike Jacobson remembers
the last Fishermen win very well, because
he was Seaside’s coach that night.
“I remember it,” he said, of Astoria’s
37-18 win over his Gulls that night. “I think
it was (Kaitlin) Lewis’s sophomore year.
We came in here and couldn’t hit a basket. I
knew it had been a while.”
In Friday’s game, Astoria was just 6-of-
30 from the field in the first half, yet they
were still tied with the Gulls at halftime,
14-14 — due in large part to Seaside’s 15
turnovers in the first half.
Seaside held a 13-5 lead midway through
the second quarter, behind two 3-pointers
from Annaka Garhofer. But Astoria finished
the first half with a 9-1 run, capped by Sam
Hemsley’s bank shot in the closing seconds.
The Fishermen were just 6-of-30 from
the field in the first half, but the Gulls kept
Astoria in the game with 15 turnovers.
“They were all good shots, they just
weren’t going in,” Jacobson said. “We
told them, ‘keep shooting. They’ll go in.’
Brooklynn (Hankwitz) played a good game
tonight, and so did Haley O’Brien and
Kelsey Fausett.”
Still, “It was pretty ugly,” he said, as
the game had a combined 37 fouls, 45 free
throws and 57 turnovers. “You know how
it is with rivalry games. We fought through
it, got it tied at halftime, then we started
hitting some shots and getting to the free
throw line, and made our free throws (14-
for-25).”
The Gulls gave up the ball 21 more
times in the second half for 36 turnovers,
while Astoria made the necessary halftime
adjustments to pull away in the second half.
“We weren’t running the offense the
way we needed to, and we made a couple
adjustments,” Jacobson said. “And this
is the first time all year that they actually
made the adjustments. We’re young and still
learning. But they made the adjustments and
went out there and did what we needed to
do. It was a good win. The girls are happy.”
PAYTON
WESTERHOLM
Basketball
Despite picking up four fouls
by halftime, the Gulls’ junior
guard posted a triple-double
in an 87-84 overtime victo-
ry against Tillamook Jan. 26.
Westerholm scored 29 points,
with 11 rebounds and 10 assists.
He also had 14 points in a victory
at Astoria Jan. 19.

Seaside boys ranked second in Cowapa League
By Gary Henley
Seaside Signal
The “Rally Kings” of Seaside
pulled off another come-from-be-
hind win Jan. 26.
Exactly two weeks after they ral-
lied from a 17-point halftime deficit
to beat North Marion, the Seaside
boys basketball team overcame a
12-point halftime deficit against
Tillamook to beat the Cheesemak-
ers in overtime, 87-84, in a Cowapa
League game at Seaside.
The Gulls were without Chase
Januik and Beau Johnson, and team-
mate Payton Westerholm had four
fouls in the first half. Januik suffered
a broken wrist against Valley Catho-
lic, and is listed as day-to-day in his
return.
Still, Seaside managed to over-
come all the obstacles to score the
overtime victory.
The Gulls took their first lead of
the second half with three minutes
left in regulation.
Trailing 77-76, Seaside’s Ryan
Hague made 1-of-2 free throw to tie
the game. Tillamook was unable to
get a shot off in the final seconds,
and a halfcourt shot by Westerholm
glanced off the front of the rim,
sending the game to overtime.
The Cheesemakers scored off the
opening tip in the extra frame, but it
was all Seaside after that.
Duncan Thompson scored six
of his 23 points in overtime, and
Westerholm made two free throws.
Hague also made a pair of free
throws with seven seconds left for a
three-point lead, and Tillamook mis-
fired on a 3-pointer at the buzzer.
Despite his four fouls in the first
half, Payton Westerholm scored a
team-high 29 points, to go with 11
rebounds and 10 assists for a tri-
ple-double. He was 10-for-15 from
the field and 9-of-12 at the free
throw line. Tillamook’s Ian Collett
led all scorers with 31 points.
The bright side to Westerholm
picking up four fouls in the first half,
said Seaside coach Bill Westerholm,
was that “it was good for some of
our other kids to have to step up and
be the aggressors on defense.
“In this stretch without Chase,
(Payton) has to become smarter on
the defensive end. It may have been
a good scenario though, because the
rest of the group had to take up the
defensive slack, rebound and aggres-
siveness. And they did. That’s a win-
win situation for future games.”
In the meantime, “if we can steal
a couple games, it will be that much
better for those kids who have to
step up. It seemed like they finally
got comfortable in the roles that they
will have to play.”
The No. 2-ranked Gulls played
at No. 1-ranked Banks Tuesday, in
what could be a state championship
game preview.
