SEASIDE BOYS RAMP
UP THEIR GAME

T
he Seaside Gulls rallied from a
17-point halftime deficit Jan. 12,
and escaped their own court with a
58-55 win over North Marion in a
nonleague boys basketball game.
Seaside “didn’t show up in the first half,”
said Gulls’ coach Bill Westerholm. “Hope-
fully we learned a lesson.”
The Gulls finished 8-of-19 at the free
throw line, which kept the Huskies in the
game.
Seaside finished 22-of-61 from the field,
including 6-of-17 from the 3-point line.
Ryan Hague paced the scoring with 22
points, followed by Duncan Thompson with
15 points and nine rebounds. Chase Januik
dished out five assists and Payton Wester-
holm had five steals.

In a meet Jan. 11 against Taft
and Valley Catholic, the Seaside
junior won the 50-yard free style
in a personal best time.
“I really liked Anna’s win
in the 50,” said Seaside coach
Shane Spell. “She did all the
things at the finish that we’ve
been talking about and it got
a PR (personal record) and the
win.” And in the Clatsop Splash
dual meet Jan. 4 with Astoria,
Huddleston had the best time
out of 25 entries in the 50, win-
ning the event in 30.05 seconds.

The Cascade Cougars have seen enough
of the Cowapa League, thank you very much.
Fortunately for the Cougs, the 71-50 non-
league boys basketball loss to Seaside Jan. 9
was the last Cascade will see of the Cowapa,
barring a playoff meeting.
Against the Cowapa’s top three teams —
any one of which could win the state title —
the Cougars haven’t had a chance.
Cascade has lost five games, and that
list includes losses to No. 1-ranked Banks
(74-38), fourth-ranked Valley Catholic (60-
33) and now the 21-point loss to the No.
3-ranked Gulls. (The Cougars did manage to
beat Scappoose last week, the Cowapa team
that will compete at the 5A level next sea-
son).
Seaside trailed Cascade 13-8 early, but by
late second quarter, the Gulls were running
circles around the taller Cougars.
A 3-pointer by Chase Januik and a three-
point play by Payton Westerholm gave Sea-
side a 33-22 lead at the break.
Januik and Ryan Hague both drained
3-pointers early in the second half. Duncan
Thompson and Rafi Sibony added baskets,
and the Gulls had secured another win by the
middle of the third quarter.
Januik led all scorers with 20 points, fol-
lowed by Hague with 14 and Westerholm
with 13.
Gulls 64, Newport 63

the Cubs that Seaside is still the defending
state champion in Class 4A boys basketball.
After a 70-59 loss to Newport Dec. 16 at
Seaside, the Gulls won the rematch Friday on
the Cubs’ home floor, 64-63.
In a potential state championship match-
up, Seaside led by as much as 10 points in the
fourth, and the No. 5-ranked Gulls made just
enough free throws down the stretch to hold
off the No. 2-ranked Cubs.
Chase Januik scored 20 points to lead
Seaside, and the Gulls had three other players
in double figures to counter the 38 points by
Newport’s Kye Blaser.
Newport had three 3-pointers in the first
quarter, but the Gulls still led after one peri-
od, 15-13.
Back-to-back scores by Januik helped
Seaside open up a 23-15 lead early in the
third quarter.

Westerholm kept the Gulls in front through-
out the first half, which ended with Seaside
ahead, 36-31.
The Gulls maintained their lead in the
third period, highlighted by consecutive
scores from Januik, Duncan Thompson and
Westerholm, as Seaside’s lead reached 43-35.
Blaser kept the Cubs close, but Seaside
made just enough free throws in the final
quarter — Westerholm making 4-of-6 in the
final 1:02 — to clinch the win.
Lady Gulls search
for points

North Marion held Seaside to a sea-
son-low in points, and the Huskies scored
in double figures in every single quarter,
in a 42-21 win Jan. 12 over the Gulls in a
nonleague game at Seaside.
The Gulls lost their fifth in a row,
which was also their fifth straight game
with under 30 points.
“Ready or not, here comes league,”
said Seaside coach Mike Hawes. “We are
in a painful process of trying to figure out
how to score. But there are signs of life.”
Seaside was 8-for-49 from the field,
2-of-15 from the 3-point line.
Annaka Garhofer led the Gulls with
six points and three steals, and teammate
Gretchen Hoekstre had seven rebounds.

Competing at 220 pounds,
the Gulls’ sophomore wrestler
finished third out of 13 athletes
in his weight bracket at the an-
nual Pac Rim Tournament, Jan.
5-6. He won a first round match
against Stayton’s Elliott Anundi
with a 58-second pin. Follow-
ing a loss in the quarterfinals,
Nelson bounced back three four
wins in consolation, including
a pin over Ilwaco’s Cahlin Mc-
Nabb; a 5-2 decision over Nick
Miller of Class 6A Tigard; a 1-0
decision against Quincy Cleve-
land of Scappoose; and an 8-1
victory over Zackary Rodriguez
of Yamhill-Carlton in the third
place match.
Cascade 56, Gulls 24
A hot-shooting Cascade team left Seaside
with a 56-24 win Jan. 9, in a nonleague
girls basketball game at the Gulls’ Nest.
The No. 6-ranked Cougars led from
start to finish, scoring the first eight points
of the game and building a 34-12 halftime
lead.

Warrenton and Astoria all finished
in the bottom six of the team
standings.
The highlight for the home
team was a third place finish for
Seaside’s Luke Nelson, who went
5-1 and scored an 8-1 decision
over Yamhill-Carlton’s Zackary
Rodriguez in the consolation fi-
