GULLS READY FOR
THE POSTSEASON

T
he Seaside Gulls will have to wait
‘til next year to get their Cowa-
pa League title … but they’re still
very much in the running for a state
championship — this year.
Seaside put the finishing touches on a
great regular season Oct. 20, with a 19-14
win over eighth-ranked Banks at Broadway
Field.
After a bye this weekend, the No. 5-ranked
Gulls will be one of the frontrunners for the
2017 4A state title, which would be their first
since 1994. The Gulls will host a Sweet 16
game Nov. 3 or 4.
Alex Teubner and turnovers were the
name of the game in Friday’s contest.
Banks ran 20 more offensive plays than
the Gulls, and outgained Seaside 431 to 366
— but the Braves also had four turnovers to
Seaside’s one.
The Gulls jumped out to a 13-0 lead in
the first quarter, following a 21-yard Pay-
ton Westerholm to Gio Ramirez touchdown
pass, and a 3-yard run by Teubner.
But the Braves battled back with two
scores before halftime for a 14-13 lead at the
break.
There was only one score in the second
half, and it belonged to the Gulls.
Westerholm found Teubner for a 15-yard
touchdown play in the third quarter.

Cross Country
A junior on the Seaside cross
country team, Rojas was the
Gulls’ top finisher in their last
two meets before the Cowapa
League championships. She
placed seventh in the 3,000-me-
ter Cullaby Lake 3,000-meter
race Oct. 19, finishing in 14
minutes, 34 seconds. Rojas ran
a personal best 23:32 in the
5,000-meter George Fox Classic
Oct. 14. It was also a season-best
for the team.

the Braves had 321 passing.
And the score held up, as the Gulls’ de-
fense held off the Braves.
Ramirez, Westerholm and Duncan
Thompson each had an interception for the
Gulls, and Teubner recovered a fumble.
Teubner had one of the biggest ground
games in Seaside history, rushing for 279 yards
on 29 carries, with a long run of 44 yards.
Westerholm completed 3-of-7 passes for
45 yards, with two of his completions going
for touchdowns.
The Gulls had 321 yards rushing, while

TILLAMOOK — The Gulls locked up a
state playoff spot with a routine 54-23 Thurs-
day night win at Tillamook Oct. 12.
Seaside built a quick 14-0 lead on a 15-yard
run by Gio Ramirez and a 28-yard pass from
Payton Westerholm to Dawson Blanchard,
before the Gulls gave up their first points in
three weeks, when Tillamook’s Austin Weeks
scored on a 1-yard run late in the first quarter.

As the top seed in the playoffs,
Seaside will be the home team
throughout the playoffs, up until the
state championship game, Nov. 11
at Liberty High School in Hillsboro.
The Gulls will host a first-round
game Nov. 1 at Broadway Field.
It was just a formality the night
of Oct. 18 at Broadway Field, where
the No. 1-ranked Seaside boys soc-
cer team put the finishing touches
on another Cowapa League cham-
pionship season.
Seaside sealed the deal with a de-
cisive 5-0 win over Tillamook, de-
feating the defending league champs
for the second time this season.

The Seaside Gulls held on to their
No. 1 ranking, and will be the favor-
ites to win the Class 4A state title
when the state playoffs begin next
week, as the top-ranked Gulls closed
out the Cowapa League season with
an easy 4-0 win at Banks Tuesday.
Seaside finishes 9-0-1 in league
play, 11-1-1 overall. Their only non-
win in league was a 2-2 tie vs. Astoria
Sept. 23. Since then, the Gulls have
gone on an eight-game win streak,
outscoring the opposition 27-1, with
seven straight shutout victories.
