t was one small step for the Astoria girls soccer program, and one
giant leap for the Lady Fishermen.
For the first time since 2013, Astoria posted a Cowapa
League win over a team other than Tillamook, as the Lady Fish-
ermen scored a goal in each half for a 2-0 win over Seaside, Sept. 23
at Broadway Field.
It was Astoria’s first win in the Clatsop Clash girls soccer series
since a 1-0 victory in 2008. And the Lady Fish had not won a 2-0
game over their rivals since 2002.
In the contest Sept. 23, early shots on goal by Astoria’s Taileigh
Cole and Abby Albright were halted by Seaside keeper Sidney Ows-
ley, before the Fishermen scored at the 28:00 mark.
Astoria freshman Hayley Kelley intercepted a goal kick by Ows-
ley, took a few steps forward and scored from 15 yards out for a 1-0
lead.
A pass moments later from Sarah Lertora to Elizabeth Whitsett
almost netted a second goal for Astoria, but Owsley made the save.
Owsley saved three more attempts over the first 16 minutes of the
second half, while Seaside shots on goal by Katie Zagata were off
the mark.
Astoria had the clincher in the 72nd minute, as Cole took a pass
up the middle and outraced the Seaside defense to score past Owsley
for the 2-nil lead.
Seaside defender Bryre Babbit was effective in stopping other
Fishermen attacks, while Astoria keeper Lexi Law got the shutout in
goal, making five saves.

the course in a personal best 13
minutes, 54 seconds. Broadway

close behind, in 23rd (14:07). The

finished sixth in the team stand-
ings.
ith some help from their rivals up north, the No.
2-ranked Seaside Gulls are now all alone in first place
atop the Cowapa League boys soccer standings.
While Astoria was knocking off previously un-
beaten Tillamook (2-1), Seaside was defeating Valley Catholic, 2-1,
Tuesday night at Broadway Field.
Colton Carter scored a pair of goals for Seaside — an open-field
shot and a penalty kick — while the Valiants scored their goal on a
penalty kick.
The Gulls improved to 2-0-1, ahead of Tillamook and Valley
Catholic, both 2-1.
Clatsop Clash
It was classic Clatsop Clash soccer Saturday night, Sept. 23, on
Broadway. The Astoria and Seaside boys soccer teams battling, trad-
ing goals, fighting for every ball … and a wild finish in front of a
good-sized crowd at Broadway Field.
And the end result? A draw, as 80 minutes of soccer finished in a
2-2 tie between the Fishermen and Gulls.
A couple of “Hail Mary” goals worked for Astoria, while Seaside
scored first and last.tempts in the final seconds.
The 2-2 draw was the first tie in the Clatsop Clash series since
a 1-1 game in 2012; and it was the first non-win for Seaside since
2014.
Astoria did not have a single shot on goal in the final 30 minutes,
while Hurd made six saves on Seaside attempts.

WARRENTON — “Celebrating
the sport of cross country,” is how
Neil Branson always describe the
3-Course Challenge.
And they do it up big in the an-
side cross country coach, but the
longtime leader of the Gulls is still
in charge of the 3-Course Chal-
lenge.
Being retired from coaching,
Branson said, “it’s easier to put time
into this. And of course the volun-
teers are consistently great, and the

Seaside goes to Sisters

SISTERS — The Seaside vol-
leyball team took a break from
Cowapa League play to make their
annual trip to the Sisters Invitation-
al, held Sept. 23.
And the trip was well worth it,
as the Gulls finished 2-1 in bracket
play.
Seaside defeated Madras (25-
16, 25-15) and South Umpqua (25-
19, 25-17), before falling to Siu-
slaw (16-25, 22-25).
The Gulls opened the league
season Sept. 12 with a home loss to
Scappoose, followed by road loss-
es at Astoria and Valley Catholic,
and another loss at the Gulls’ Nest
to Tillamook.
As of Sept. 25, three Cowa-
pa League teams were ranked in
the top 10 of the OSAA rankings
— Valley Catholic (second), Til-
lamook (fourth) and Scappoose
(10th).
Astoria is ranked 13th and Sea-
side 19th out of the 40 teams in
Class 4A volleyball.
