Teubner opened the scoring with a 25-yard touchdown run in the first quarter, and added TD runs of 20, four and six yards to finish with four touchdowns. He rushed for 162 yards on 23 carries. In a Week 2 loss at Clatskanie, Teubner had 145 yards rushing on 15 carries, running his sea- son total to 307 yards on 38 at- tempts, or 8.1 yards per carry. Seaside Signal he Seaside Gulls overcame a loss in the first set with three inspired vic- tories in Game 2, 3 and 4, on their way to a win over Gladstone, 19-25, 25-16, 25-13, 25-13, in nonleague volleyball action Sept. 5 at the Gulls’ Nest. Seaside cleaned up a few errors and prob- lems from the service line in the first two games, and cruised from there as the No. 8-ranked Gulls improved to 4-1 overall. Seaside had a combined 11 missed serves in Games 1 and 2, but just three missed serves in the final two games. Alyssia Gonzales, Anna Huddleston and Jetta Ideue were serving up aces in Game 3, and Tori Tomlin highlighted Game 4 with three straight ace serves to help the Gulls pull away. Meanwhile, the struggles continue for Gladstone, which may be part of the Cowapa League beginning in the 2018-19 school year. Gladstone came out strong in the first game, as senior Elli Philo had a stuff block, a kill and an ace serve to give the Glads an early 11-7 lead. Seaside rallied briefly, but Gladstone opened up a 20-13 advantage on its way to the Game 1 victory. The Gulls trailed 7-2 in the second game, but Gonzales caught fire from the line, serv- ing Seaside into a 9-9 tie. Seaside’s Nikki Mercado had a stuff block on a hit by Philo for a 10-9 lead … and the Gulls never trailed again. Consecutive kills by Mercado, Ideue, T Gulls win one, lose one on the gridiron COLIN MURPHEY/EO MEDIA GROUP Alyssia Gonzales prepares to spike the ball for the Seagulls against Gladstone. Tomlin and Gonzales highlighted the Game 2 win, coupled with a pair of aces from Maddie Jensen, a tap for a kill by Emy Kiser, and Hud- dleston set Gonzales for a kill at game point. Games 3 and 4 were not even close, as Seaside’s offense found a rhythm, and their hitters found open spaces on the floor. Ideue and Tomlin had off-speed kills for points, the left-handed Gonzales delivered a cross-court kill, and Ideue had a pair of aces By Gary Henley Seaside Signal CLATSKANIE — The Clatskanie Tigers scored one of their biggest vic- tories in years Sept. 8 on their home field, where the Class 3A team out of the Lewis & Clark League scored a 14-0 win over Class 4A Seaside. Clatskanie’s J’Kari Combs scored two touchdowns in the second quar- ter for all the scoring, while the Tiger as Seaside built an eventual 24-11 lead. It was more of the same in Game 4, in which the Gulls built an 11-2 lead after three staight service aces from Tomlin. Gladstone rallied to within 13-9, but Sea- side bumped the lead right back to 23-10, capped by an ace serve from Huddleston. Fittingly, Ideue drilled the final serve into the top of the net, but the ball crawled over for a service ace and match point. defense tossed a shutout at the Gulls, who were coming off a 47-13 win over Newport the week before. Combs scored his first touch- down on a 68-yard pass completion from Cooper Blodgett, then caught a 5-yard TD from Blodgett. Seaside’s Alex Teubner rushed for 145 yards on 15 carries, and led the Gulls with seven tackles on defense. Tomlin played a big role in Seaside’s four-game win over Gladstone Sept. 5, powering kills down the middle and blocking several Gladiator attacks at the net. She also had three straight service aces in Game 4. Through matches the week- end of Sept. 10-11, the Gulls had more victories (six) than any team in the Cowapa League. Tomlin will be a big presence, literally, for Seaside in league play. Clatskanie running back James Hel- men rushed for 71 yards on 16 car- ries. Gulls dominate Molalla Seaside Signal The Seaside boys soccer team took the field Tuesday night for their first game in almost two weeks, as smoky air caused by forest fires in the Columbia Gorge postponed a pair of games last week. Those contests will be made up at a later date. In the meantime, the 12-day layoff had no effect whatsoever on the Gulls, who ran circles around Molalla in a nonleague game at Broadway Field. Seaside scored a goal in the first half then tacked on three in the second for a 4-0 win over the Indians. They’re only two games into the season, but the Gulls (2-0) are quickly climbing the OSAA rank- ings, with Seaside moving into the seventh spot following Tuesday’s win.
