he Seaside Gulls were well-rep-
resented the weekend of June
16-17, in the annual Oregon
Athletic Coaches Association’s
(OACA) All-Star basketball series in Eu-
gene and Wilsonville.
Seaside’s Bill Westerholm served as
one of three coaches for the North All-
Stars, which finished 2-0 and won the
series final over the South All-Stars, 114-
87.
The 45th annual OACA All-Star series
featured the top small-school (2A/3A/4A)
seniors from around the state.
Three of Westerholm’s former players
were on the North roster, Attikin Babb,
Jackson Januik and Hunter Thompson.
And not surprisingly, Januik was named
Player of the Series, just months after he
was selected as the 4A state Player of the
Year for the 2016-17 season.
The North team also included Valley
Catholic seniors Colin Hagerty and Dan-
iel Hardy, while Dayton’s Ron Hop and
Vernonia’s David Weller joined Wester-
holm on the North coaching staff.
The North All-Stars defeated the East
All-Stars in Game 1, June 16 at Northwest
Christian College in Eugene. The North
followed up with the win over the South
June 17 at Wilsonville High School.
Seaside was also represented in the
girls’ All-Star basketball series, which in-
cluded former Gulls Maddi Utti and Syd-
ney Villegas on the North team.
The North All-Stars split their series.

In addition to being the event’s title

up to the event.

WARRENTON — An 8-0 lead after two
innings was plenty for two Seaside pitchers
to work with June 13, as the Gulls scored an
eventual 9-1 win over Warrenton, in a Junior
Baseball win at Huddleston Field.
Seaside starter Duncan Thompson al-
lowed just two hits in four solid innings on
the mound, with five strikeouts and two walks.
Gage McFadden closed it out, giving up a hit
with three strikeouts and a walk over the final
three innings.
Senior-to-be Dawson Blanchard provided
most of the offense for the Gulls, as he was
4-for-4 with two singles and two doubles at the
plate.
Blanchard’s double in the first inning
scored the first run, and Seaside tacked on runs
on a balk call and two bases-loaded walks in
the second inning.
Alex Teubner added a run-scoring single,
driving in Isaias Jantes; a fielder’s choice
grounder by Payton Westerholm brought in
Teubner for a 6-0 lead; Travis Fenton sprinted
home on a double-steal attempt; and Blanchard
beat out an infield single that also scored
Westerholm for the Gulls’ eight-run lead.
The Warriors finally jumped on the score-
board in the fourth, when Austin Little led off
with an infield single, stole second and took

third on a passed ball. He scored on an errant
throw back to the mound.
Seaside tacked on a run in the fifth, as
Blanchard had a leadoff double to deep
right-center field, and made his way around
the bases on three walks.
Three Warrenton pitchers combined to
give up seven hits, with 12 strikeouts and nine
walks.
Little had two of Warrenton’s three hits.

Will coaching duties clash with his du-
ties as principal?
“I understand the dilemma that this pres-
ents,” Roberts said. “I understand my pri-
mary role and I can assure you that this will
not impact the way I currently run the high
school or the way I will run the high school
in the future. This is not a long-term fix.”
The Gulls finished the 2016 season at
2-6, with an 0-5 record within the Cowapa
League.
“We will be all right,” Roberts said.
“Last year we were really young and that
was a real challenge. Those kids got a lot
of valuable time last year. They’ve matured,
worked their tails off and got better in the
off-season. I’m looking forward to a suc-
cessful year.”
A graduate of Linfield College, Roberts
received his master’s degree in teaching at
Pacific University. He began his teaching
career at Centennial High School in Port-
land and later taught at Sherwood High
School.
Roberts, his wife Nissa, and daughter
McKenna live in Gearhart.
“I have 100 percent confidence in Mr.
Roberts’ ability to do both jobs in an excel-
lent way,” Superintendent Sheila Roley said
after the meeting. “He has a very supportive
staff, he’s very hard-working, knows what
he’s doing and he’s super committed to our
kids and our community. I have full confi-
dence in his ability to do it.”
