GLADSTONE — With the Cowapa
League championships coming up later this
week, the Astoria girls track team is primed
and ready for another state title run.
The Lady Fishermen warmed up for the
postseason by closing out their regular sea-
son schedule with another team champion-
ship, at the annual Dick Baker Invitational,
hosted by Gladstone May 6.
Astoria scored 164 points to far out-dis-
tance the runner-up (Class 5A Corvallis, with
106.5 points) in the girls’ team standings.
The Seaside and Astoria boys were third
and fourth, respectively, behind Central and
Molalla.
It was a banner day in general for the
North Coast, with Astoria or Seaside ath-
letes winning 13 of the combined 34 events,
against some of the top competition in the
state. The Gulls and Fishermen also com-
bined for 11 second-place and six third-place
showings.
The Astoria girls were led by quadruple
winner Darian Hageman, with wins in the
high jump (5-2), long jump (17-3¾) triple
jump (37-2) and pole vault (10-0). Teammate
Shrida Sharma was second in the pole vault.
On the track, the Lady Fish won or placed
in the top three in everything from the sprints
(sisters Natalie and Gracie Cummings, first
and second, respectively, in the 100 meters
and Gracie won the 200 meters), the hurdles
(Nara Van de Grift second in both hurdle rac-
es), to the relays (first in the 400-meter relay,
second in the 1,600).
On the boys’ side, the Fishermen and
Gulls showed that the race for the league title
could be a two-team battle between Astoria
and Seaside.
With junior Tim Barnett leading the way,
the Astoria boys will have a shot.
Barnett won the javelin with a throw of
159-feet, 1 inch (teammate Donald Dieffen-
bach was third, 148-0), and took second in
the shot put and discus behind Molalla senior
Mont Child.
Lucas Caruana added a win in the 3,000
meters, in a personal best 9:25.37.
For Seaside, senior Jackson Januik —
the back-to-back state champion in the 800
meters — is looking at No. 3, following his
win Saturday in a personal best 1:57.80, the

Kotson earned Cowapa All-

fifth place tie at the District 1 girls
golf championships, held May 2
at the Astoria Golf & Country Club.
A senior, Kotson shot a 52 on
the front nine and 54 on the back,
for a final round score of 106, tied
with Astoria’s Jenna Travers.

The Gulls’ Bradley Rzewnicki won the
1,500 meters in 4:15.01; Will Garvin took
first in the 300 hurdles in 42.07; Juneau
Meyer was second in the 100 (11.65), and
the Gulls’ 1,600 relay of Levi Card, Hunter
Thompson, Jackson Januik and Meyer took
second in 3:31.97.
In the field events, Seaside’s Phoenix
Johnson cleared a personal best 6-0 to win
the high jump, and also took second in the
triple jump and long jump.
Scappoose will be the host team for the
Cowapa League Championships, Thursday
and Friday.
Cowapa 4-Way
BEAVERTON — The Seaside track team
took part in a four-way Cowapa League dual
meet May 3 at Valley Catholic, with the Val-
iants, Banks and Tillamook.
And the Gulls scored some big wins on
the track and in the field.
Victories for the Seaside boys included
senior Juneau Meyer in the 100 meters (in
a personal best 11.54 seconds) and the 200
meters (23.54, another PR).
Valley Catholic freshman Nate Hicken
edged Seaside’s Bradley Rzewnicki in the
800 meters, with Rzewnicki still running a
personal best 2:07.17.
Seaside junior Rafi Sibony won the 1,500
meters in 4:14.76, ahead of two Valley Cath-
olic runners; Will Garvin placed second in
both hurdle races; and Gulls’ senior Phoenix
Johnson cleared a personal best 5-feet, 10
inches to win the high jump, and soared a PR
40-11½ to take the triple jump.
On the girls’ side, Seaside’s Gretchen
Hoekstre highlighted Seaside’s day with
wins in the shot put (39-6) and discus (106-
3), and took third in the javelin with a PR
toss of 100-6.
Seaside’s Lizzy Barnes took second in the
long jump and triple jump.

The senior right-hander
pitched a complete-game May
5 at Broadway Field, leading the
Gulls to a 4-2 win over Tillamook.
Plampin went the seven-in-
ning distance on the mound for
the Gulls, allowing five hits with
five strikeouts and no walks.
He threw just 71 pitches, 54 for
strikes.
Plampin had the lone RBI for
the Gulls, who swept all three
games from the Cheesemakers
this season.

Fishermen defeat Gulls

ASTORIA — After scoring a
10-0 win in Game 1, the Astoria
softball team actually had to rally
from behind in Game 2, as the Fish-
ermen overcame an early 2-1 deficit
to win 15-3, to complete a Clatsop
Clash doubleheader sweep over
Seaside, late Thursday night, May 4
at CMH Field.
Astoria freshman Julia Norris
picked up both victories in the cir-
cle, as she pitched all five innings of
Game 1, allowing just one hit with
six strikeouts and three walks. Sea-
side’s Jetta Ideue took the loss, de-
spite striking out seven. Norris also
had two hits, including a two-run
double in the third inning.
The Gulls committed four errors
in the first game and multiple errors
and miscues in Game 2. Still, Sea-
side scored first on a bunt single by
Ideue, with GeriAnn Klaffke scor-
ing on an Astoria error in the top of
the first. Klaffke singled to left field
in the second, scoring Mica Paranal
to give the Gulls a 2-1 lead. But As-
toria answered with 13 runs in the
bottom of the third, highlighted by
a two-run single up the middle by
Hailey O’Brien.
Ideue had two of Seaside’s hits
in Game 2, while Norris came on
in relief of McKailyn Rogers in the
third inning.
