Seaside bounced back from its one and
only loss of the season last week with a de-
cisive 84-53 win over Tillamook Tuesday at
the Gulls’ Nest.
“We had a hard practice (Monday), we
came out with a lot of energy, created turn-
overs and got out to a good lead,” said Sea-
side coach Bill Westerholm, whose team is
still ranked No. 1 in the state at the 4A level,
with an 18-1 overall record.
While the Gulls lost a close game to Val-
ley Catholic late last week, Tillamook was
coming off a 40-point win over Astoria.
But Seaside had a lock on Tuesday’s
game in the second quarter, outscoring the
Cheesemakers 33-4, for a 55-19 halftime
lead.
Senior Hunter Thompson hit six 3-point-
ers, as he sparked the Gulls with 26 points
in the first half, on his way to a career-high
31 points.
Attikin Babb scored 11 and Chase Januik
added 10 for Seaside.

For the second year in a row,
Lin finished second in the Dis-
trict 200-yard freestyle event be-
hind Newport’s Allison Bachart,
and qualfied for the state meet
in Gresham.
Lin’s time was 2:13.90 —
nearly a four-second drop from
her time in the preliminaries.
Lin is a sophomore who has
the 11th-fastest seed time in the
200 freestyle at the state meet
this weekend.
Gulls suffer first loss
The last of the state’s unbeaten teams
went down to defeat Friday night, Feb. 10,
at Valley Catholic.
In a potential state championship match-
up, the Valiants knocked off the previously
undefeated, No. 1-ranked Seaside Gulls,
68-50, in a Cowapa League boys basketball
showdown.
Sporting a 17-0 record entering the game,
the Gulls were unable to make their usual
big scoring run, while the bigger, taller Val-
iants had their way for much of the game.
Six-foot-3 senior Daniel Hardy scored 18
points, Jack Grassberger (6-5) had 13, with
Colin Haggerty (6-3) and Andrew Plambeck
(6-4) tossing in 10 points apiece for the Val-
iants.
It was a huge victory for Valley Catholic,
the only team with a chance at catching the
Gulls in the league standings.
And catch them they did, as the Valiants
pulled into a first-place tie atop the Cowapa
League. Both teams are now 7-1 in league
play, with two games remaining.
A pair of early 3-pointers from Chase
Januik had Seaside in front, 10-8, but the
Valiants answered with four 3-pointers the
remainder of the first half, with inside points
from Hardy, who had 12 of his 18 in the first
half.

minute of the third quarter, on 3-pointers by
Jackson Januik and Hunter Thompson.
But the Valiants were able to squash any
comeback hopes for the Gulls with a 9-0 run
midway through the fourth quarter, high-
lighted by a dunk by Hardy off a fast break.
Thompson and Payton Westerholm both
fouled out for Seaside, while Jackson Januik
finished with a team-high 19 points for the
Gulls.
Clatsop Clash win
The Seaside boys basketball team can
generally win on any court, any day of the
week, day or night.
But the undefeated, No. 1-ranked Gulls
actually faced a challenge at Astoria — win-
ning on a court where they hadn’t won since
2014.
Seaside took care of that little matter with
a 73-53 victory over the Fishermen Wednes-
day, Feb. 8, at the Brick House, where the
Gulls did just enough to stay one step ahead
of Astoria, from start to finish.
The Gulls were 0-for-2 on their last two
trips to Astoria, as the Fishermen won last
year’s game 63-57, and took down the Gulls
42-33 the year before that.
“This was a BIG win for us,” said Seaside
coach Bill Westerholm, with an emphasis on
‘big.’
“They know,” Westerholm said of his
players, and their 0-for-2 record at Astoria.
“This is a tough place to play. There’s so
much history here, and when Seaside comes
in, the kids get a little bit more excited.”
In the end, two players had 20-plus points
for the Gulls, as Seaside continues its march
to Hillsboro, where the Gulls will be playing
just over a month from now.
Payton Westerholm had two 3-pointers
in the opening minute, sparking a 20-point
night for the sophomore. Seaside’s other Su-
per Soph, Chase Januik, led with 23 points.

The senior was busy at the
District swim meet in Astoria,
racking up points to help the
Seaside boys finish second be-
hind Newport.
Garvin had the lone victory for
the Gulls, winning the 100-yard
butterfly in 57.63 seconds.
He also helped the Gulls qualify
two relay teams for the state meet
— the 200-yard medley (with Isa-
iah Collins, Brad Rzewnicki and
Luke Liljenwall) and the 200-yard
freestyle (with James Kennedy,
Rzewnicki and Liljenwall).

The Seaside Lady Gulls are one
hurdle away from another Cow-
apa League championship and
their first undefeated league season
since 2013-14.
Sydney Villegas celebrated Se-
nior Night, Tuesday, Feb. 14, at
the Gulls’ Nest with a team-high
16 points in a 63-37 win over Til-
lamook. Maddi Utti joined in the
fun with another triple-double —
14 points, 12 assists and 10 steals,
with six rebounds.
Jetta Ideue chipped in a ca-
reer-high 13 points, while the Gulls
had 24 steals as a team.
Seaside coach Mike Hawes
called it a “solid, workman-like
victory. We seemed to be stuck in
the mud a bit the first quarter-and-
a-half, especially defensively, but
we kept scoring enough to keep
increasing the lead.”
The Gulls outscored Tillamook
40-15 over the middle two quarters
to build an eventual 55-23 lead.
