Participants will examine and refine their own writing process while explor- ing techniques to mine and en- rich the material from which they write. Vanasse is the author of 17 published books as well as numerous articles and essays. She has a master’s degree in arts and humanities and at- tended the Squaw Valley Writers workshops. Vanasse is founder of the author’s collec- tive Running Fox books and co-founder of the 49 Writers group based in Anchorage, Alaska. Get acquainted with gray whales Marine ecologist Florence Sullivan routinely gets up close and personal with gray whales and other ocean crea- tures. Join her at the Seaside Public Library on Wednesday, Jan. 18, as she kicks off the 2017 season of Listening to the Land presentations, this year focused on wildlife. “Inside Gray Whales” begins at 6 pm. Admission is free. Scientists such as Sulli- van are using new research techniques to expand what we know about these and other marine mammals: what they eat and how they forage, for example, as well as how ocean noise — natural and human-caused — affects their behavior and overall health. These research teams are using underwater Go-Pro cameras and aerial drones to closely observe individual whales, and they’re deploying drifting hy- drophones to record the variety of noises whales are exposed to. Sullivan is a graduate stu- dent in Oregon State Univer- sity’s Department of Fisheries and Wildlife, where she is a research assistant in OSU’s Geospatial Ecology of Marine Megafauna lab. Listening to the Land is a monthly winter speaker series offered January through May and presented by North Coast Land Conservancy and the Ne- canicum Watershed Council in partnership with the Seaside Public Library.
