HELENS — St. Helens tried to run with the Gulls, in a nonleague girls basketball game Dec. 28 at St. Helens. And that was a big mistake by the Lions, as Seaside cruised past the former Cowapa League team, 82-46. “St. Helens wanted to press the tempo and get into a track meet,” said Seaside coach Mike Hawes. “Fortunately we had the best runner.” That was Seaside senior Maddi Utti, who scored 31 points, with eight rebounds, seven assists and six steals. “Maddi was Maddi, but we had contri- butions from everyone,” Hawes said. “Lucy Bodner continues to give us good play, and Gretchen Hoekstre and Anesha Smart played their best games. Annaka Garhofer came off the bench for a career-high 14, including three treys. Everybody played well and contribut- ed.” TRINITY TURNER Sophomore A sophomore swing player for the Lady Gulls, Turner performed well in the Seaside junior varsi- ty’s recent tournament at Glad- stone. The team, coached by Tia Abbey, also owns a winning re- cord, with seven sophomores on the roster. Turner also had one of two Seaside blocked shots in a varsity win at St. Helens. Pirates 56, Gulls 51 COOS BAY — Marshfield trailed 13-2 just minutes into the game, but the Pirates man- aged to overcome the big first half deficit to score a 56-51 overtime victory over Seaside, in a back-and-forth nonleague girls basketball game Dec. 21. Tess Garrett’s basket with six seconds left in regulation tied the game at 48-48, and the Pirates outscored the Gulls 8-3 in the ex- tra quarter to snap Seaside’s five-game win streak. Maddi Utti and Sydney Villegas scored eight points apiece in the first half, as the Gulls left the floor with a 28-24 lead at the break. The Pirates opened the third quarter on a 10-0 run, highlighted by 3-pointers from Brandi Thompson and Ravyn Miranda. But a career game for Seaside’s Bryre Bab- bitt kept the Gulls in it throughout the second half, as the junior scored three consecutive buckets towards the end of the third period to bring Seaside to within 39-38, and her layup with 45 seconds left in regulation gave the Gulls a 45-44 lead. Seaside was held to a sea- son-low in points, and even trailed 32-29 late in the third quarter, fol- lowing a layup and score by Marsh- field’s Scott Clough, who finished with a game-high 26 points. But Jackson Januik’s score at the buzzer to end the third period gave the Gulls a 33-32 lead, and Seaside would not trail again. Hunter Thompson connected on a 3-pointer early in the fourth, Chase Januik scored underneath, and Duncan Thompson’s bank shot had the Gulls in front with five minutes left, 42-37. Still, the Pirates closed to within 45-44, before Seaside was able to close it out at the free throw line, where the Gulls were 10-for-12 in the fourth quarter, as three Marsh- field starters fouled eventually fouled out. Chase Januik led Seaside with 18 points, followed by Jackson Januik with 16.
