Also for the second year in
a row, Januik was selected as
the MVP of the Holiday Clas-
sic. After watching his brother
Chase score
32 on Day 1
against Elma,
Jackson led
Seaside with
24 in a win
over Madras,
then was one
of five players
to score in double figures (15)
in Saturday’s championship win
over Newport.
Januik is also now the Seaside
boys basketball leader in career
points, breaking the previous
mark of 976 held by Matt Clark.
After Saturday’s win, Januik had
1,000 career points.
It was another Holiday Classic championship for the Seaside girls basketball team.
The Gulls forced 27 turnovers, as they con-
tinue to win games (four in a row) with solid
defensive efforts.
“A nice solid victory tonight, capping the
three-game tournament with a Holiday cham-
pionship,” said Seaside coach Mike Hawes.
“Another strong night from Utti and (Sydney)
Villegas (10 points, eight rebounds), filling the
stat sheet with rebounds, steals, points and as-
sists.
“But solid contributions from all-tourney
team member Jetta Ideue and some timely
3-pointers from Annaka Garhofer helped,
too,” he said, as the sophomore made three
treys in the second half, to go with two from
Utti, as the Gulls hit five of their 15 3-point
attempts.

were in their half of the
tournament, the Seaside
girls were untouchable in
the girls’ bracket of the
Seaside Holiday Classic.
The Gulls cruised to the championship, fin-
ishing 3-0 following their 51-32 win over South
Whidbey Saturday, following wins over Elma
(70-48) and Cottage Grove (50-30) Thursday
and Friday.
Maddi Utti was the tournament MVP, aver-
aging almost a quadruple-double over the three
games. In the championship win over the Fal-
cons, she had 22 points, eight rebounds, five
steals and five assists.
the Gulls well in front by halftime, 23-9.
“It was nice to get some games in after
the 10-day layoff, and keep improving on the
court,” Hawes said. “Everyone contributed.
Feels like we’re starting to figure some things
out and find our identity.”

Cottage Grove was within four points of
Seaside midway through the second quarter,
but a 17-0 run by the Lady Gulls led to a 50-30
win for Seaside Friday night, on Day 2 of the
Holiday Classic.
The Lions put up a tough challenge in the
first half, rallying from a 19-10 deficit to with-
in 19-15, before the Gulls closed out the sec-
ond quarter on a 6-0 run, highlighted by two
baskets from Sydney Villegas and a score by
Maddi Utti as time expired.

Seaside boys win title in
Nygaard Invitational
By Gary Henley
EO Media Group
The Astoria swim teams took
advantage of the “home water”
Saturday afternoon, in the annual
Andrew Nygaard Memorial Invita-
tional at the Astoria Aquatic Cen-
ter.
Celebrating and honoring the
life of former Astoria swimmer
Andrew Nygaard, the Fishermen
scored a pair of second-place team
finishes in the annual meet, which
included four of the six Cowapa
schools.
The Tillamook girls and the
Seaside boys won the team titles,
while the Cheesemakers won the
combined team total score with
480 points, followed by Astoria
(454) and Seaside (393).
The Seaside boys won seven
different events, beginning with
the 200-yard medley relay, where
Luke Liljenwall, Brad Rzewnicki,
Will Garvin and Isaiah Collins won
in 2 minutes, 1.70 seconds.
Rzewnicki added a victory in
the 200-yard individual medley
(2:28.98); Liljenwall took the 50-
yard freestyle (25.67) and the 100-
yard freestyle (58.95); Garvin won
the 100-yard butterfly (1:01.91) and
the 100-yard backstroke (1:07.14);
and the same four took first in the
200-yard freestyle relay (1:46.52).
“Will Garvin PR’d today in the
‘fly,” said first-year Seaside coach
Shane Spell. “The guys’ 200 med-
ley relay started off good with a
win; Bradley (Rzewnicki) had
some good swims in his first meet
of the year; Kendy Lin for the girls
… the returners took care of busi-
ness, and we have some newcom-
ers who are improving every single
meet. I like to see those PR’s. For
five kids, it’s their first year of com-
petitive swimming.”
