in prison for death of toddler

A Seaside man convicted of kill-
ing his girlfriend’s 2-year-old daugh-
ter will spend close to 40 years in
prison, the maximum sentence the
law allows.
“Mr. Roden, you are a cruel man,”
Clatsop County Circuit Court Judge
Paula Brownhill said before reading
28-year old Randy Roden’s sentence
Monday, Nov. 21. “You have an ex-
cellent legal team who has represent-
ed you in the best possible light.”
But, she added, he was the one
taking care of 2-year old Evangelina
Wing “when her arm was broken and
her mouth ruined and her hair torn
out by the roots.”
“If you get out of jail and hurt an-
other child, God have mercy on your
soul.”
In October, after several days of
deliberation, a 12-person jury found
Roden guilty of murder by abuse,
felony murder, manslaughter, crim-

inal mistreatment and assault in the
death of Evangelina Wing in 2014
and the abuse of her two surviving
brothers.
For these charges, Judge Brown-
hill sentenced him to just over 35
years in prison. He is still serving
time on a prior coercion conviction,
which will add to his overall prison
time.
Roden was acquitted of four
counts of aggravated murder, serious
charges that carried the possibility
of the death penalty or life in prison.
The jury also found him not guilty of
charges of sexual abuse.
Those involved in the investiga-
tion and trial say it was one of the
worst cases of child abuse in Clat-
sop County that they had ever seen.
Evangelina Wing and her two broth-
ers had multiple injuries, with Eva
bearing the most extreme of the inju-
ries. An autopsy determined she died
from blunt force trauma.
In a prepared statement she read
over the phone, Melissa Smith, Eva’s
aunt, talked about the photos of Eva’s
battered body.
“I will never be able to burn these
things from my mind,” she said. “My
family has forever been changed.”
Dorothy Wing, Eva’s mother, was
sentenced to 15 years in prison for
first-degree manslaughter and two
counts of first-degree criminal mis-
treatment. She testified against Ro-
den at Roden’s trial.

Two women are dead after a
two-vehicle crash on Highway 26
east of Seaside on Saturday, Dec.
3, with speed reported as a possi-
ble cause.
A 2006 Chevy Equinox was
traveling eastbound on Highway
26 at about 7:30 when it crossed
the centerline and struck a 2012
GMC pickup. The driver of the
Chevrolet, Anali Aguilar Agona,
21, of Cornelius was pronounced
dead at the scene. Her passenger,
Marilyn Manriquez Gutierrez, 23,
also of Cornelius, was also pro-
nounced dead at the scene.
Speed may be a contributing
cause of the accident, State Police
said.
The driver of the GMC, Mi-
chael J Heuvelhorst, 63, and his
passenger, Linda J Heuvelhorst,
69, were treated for non-life
threatening injuries. Both are Sea-
