Astoria chalks one up in
‘ugly’ homecoming win
By Gary Henley

T
here have been other, more
memorable Clatsop Clash
football games in recent years.
Astoria’s 44-38 overtime vic-
tory in 2012, and Seaside’s 30-29
win the following year come to mind.
The Friday, Oct. 4, Clash at CHM Field
was deinitely not one for the time capsule.
Because “the game that could get ugly”
did, in fact, get ugly.
The Fishermen opened up a big irst-quar-
ter lead, and for the second year in a row, As-
toria won a lopsided Clatsop Clash, 50-12.

A middle blocker, Gonza-
les had 10 kills and helped the
Seaside volleyball team score a
huge victory Oct. 4 at Astoria.
It was Seaside’s third straight
win over the Lady Fishermen.
It was also the second Cowapa
League win of the season for the
Gulls, the most league victories
in one season since 2010 for the
Seaside volleyball program.
Packed homecoming
It was a packed house for Homecoming
at CMH Field. The only memorable note to
the game was that it was Seaside’s irst ofi-
cial football visit to the Fish Bowl. The Gulls
played at Astoria in 2014, winning 35-14 in
the last game at John Warren Field.
Astoria was the heavily favored team Fri-
day, however.
Showing all the signs of being a state
championship contender, the No. 3-ranked
Fishermen were coming off an impressive
victory over fourth-ranked Valley Catholic.
The Gulls, meanwhile, are a very young
team in a rebuilding phase, and were coming
off a 62-6 loss to Scappoose.
Seaside trailed 41-0 after one quarter in
that one, and found themselves behind 33-0
after the irst period in Friday’s game.
Astoria’s Samboy Tuimato scored twice on
short runs in the irst quarter, and later ran 54
yards for a touchdown in the second half to
complete a one-play drive.
Fridtjof Fremstad threw three TD passes
(making that 13 touchdowns in four weeks),
two to Kyle Strange and one to Ryan Palek;
and Zach Patterson returned an interception
30 yards for a score.
Five of Astoria’s scoring drives took place
in ive plays or less.
Meeting expectations
“It went how we hoped it would,” said
Astoria coach Howard Rub. “(The Gulls) are

real young. With a irst-year coach and all the
transition, they’re a younger group. Their kids
played hard, and did all they could to com-
pete. We just had more horses tonight.”
To their credit, the Gulls’ defense tightened
up after the irst quarter, allowing only a ield
goal in the second quarter.
And the ield goal happened to be a CMH
Field record that could stand for a while, as
Andrew Schauermann (of the soccer Schau-
ermanns) nailed a 47-yard attempt as time ex-
pired in the irst half.
The game was under a running clock mid-
way through the third quarter, but Seaside was
able to score twice in the fourth, on a 1-yard
run by Garret Kiser, and a 17-yard TD toss
from Kiser to Duncan Thompson on the inal
play of the game.
Tyler Ranta led Astoria with 95 yards rush-
ing on 10 carries (Ranta had 100 yards, before
a 5-yard loss on his inal carry).
Fremstad completed 12 passes for 166
yards — far below his average, but the Fisher-
men were working on some other things.
“We really wanted to improve on our run
game, especially the option stuff,” Rub said.
“We haven’t run a ton of options this year.
And we were able to get to the edge real well.
“We wanted to see Tyler run well. He’s an

S
easide scored its second win
of the season Tuesday, Oct.
11, in a late night Clatsop
Clash game with Astoria at CMH
Field.
A penalty kick by Seaside’s Liz-
zy Barnes midway through the sec-
ond half was the game’s lone goal,
giving the Gulls a 1-0 victory.
The Lady Gulls take over fourth-
place in the league standings, at
2-4-1 (2-7-2 overall), ahead of As-
toria (1-5-1).
“The beginning of the game start-
ed a little slow, but then we started
applying some pressure,” said Sea-
side irst-year coach Josh Garhofer.
“And Patty Granillo (a senior de-
fender) was a big part of that. Of-
fensively, we had a few corner kick
opportunities, but we just couldn’t
score.
“GeriAnn Klaffke had a tremen-
dous game for us.”
Klaffke — a junior goalkeeper
who has been substituting for Kirs-
tin Lent (concussion) for the last
two weeks, recorded the shutout in
goal for Seaside, which plays at Val-
ley Catholic next Tuesday, Oct. 18.
