Seaside tops Astoria
Seaside Signal
fter splitting their two matches
with Astoria last season, the
Seaside Gulls got the jump
on the Lady Fishermen in the
irst Clatsop Smash volleyball
match of 2016.
Taking advantage of their home court,
the Gulls held serve and scored a three-game
sweep over Astoria, 25-22, 25-16, 25-21.
“The girls came out ready to play tonight,
which is what we’re going to have to do ev-
ery night in league play,” said Seaside coach
Angie Huntsman.
Seaside’s Maddi Utti pounded out 20 kills
with a .415 hitting percentage, and teammate
Alyssia Gonzales added seven kills for the
Gulls.
Utti also came up with 14 digs, and Jetta
Ideue had 12 digs in the Sept. 15 battle.
“Our setters Annaka Garhofer and Anna
Huddleston are making good decisions at
key times,” Huntsman said. “Huddleston,
Ideue and Sequoia Shand were all 100 per-
cent from the service line tonight and Lucy
Bodner served ive aces.”
In addition, “Tori Tomlin had a couple big
blocks at crucial times, which are huge when
it comes to momentum.”
Games 1 and 3 were back and forth, said
Astoria coach Jessie Todd, following her irst
Clatsop Clash.
“Maddi Utti was tough for them, but Jac-
queline (Jarrett) also had some great stuff
blocks on her,” Todd said. “We battled and
we played hard, which was good to see.”
Jarrett had six kills for the Lady Fisher-
men, as did Darian Hageman and Kes Sand-
strom.
Jarrett also had seven blocks (“she owned
the net tonight,” Todd said).
“And Chelsea Christensen had some awe-
some digs. She’s been a very solid defensive
presence for us.”
Meanwhile, the Gulls improve to 5-3
overall and 1-1 in league play, equaling their
win total in league all of last season.
The Fishermen drop to 0-2 in league, and
return to action Saturday in the Vernonia
Tournament.

Valley Catholic over Seaside
Fourth-ranked Valley Catholic defeated
Seaside in three games at the Gulls’ Nest, 25-
12, 26-24, 25-20, in a Cowapa League vol-
leyball match Sept. 20.
Valley’s Regan Dean went on a sev-
en-point serving run to close out the irst set.
Seaside came back strong in Game 2 and
led 23-19. A sideout by the Valiants, fol-
lowed by a Seaside hitting error, a Valley
ace and another Seaside hitting error, tied the
game at 23-23.
Both teams battled hard in a long rally,
ending in a kill by Seaside’s Maddi Utti to
put Seaside up, 24-23.
But a kill by Dean on the outside tied it at
24-24, and the Valiants scored the next two
points on a Seaside hitting error and another
kill from Dean.
Utti led the Gulls with 14 kills, while Al-
yssia Gonzales had ive. Jetta Ideue inished
with 13 digs and was 100 percent from the
service line for Seaside.
