Swimming Kadi takes the helm for Seaside swim team By Gary Henley The Swimmers EO Media Group The successful Seaside swim program is under new management, as Mike Kadi takes over for Alex Reed as the Gulls’ varsity coach. And with Kadi now at the helm, you can consider the Gulls in good hands. Kadi is a member of U.S. Masters Swimming, having competed most recently for the Mountain View Masters club. He is also a USA Swimming certi¿ed coach. Which makes the Seaside swimmers certi¿ed challengers in the District 1/4A. The Seaside boys took sec- ond in districts last year, ¿nish- ing 96 points behind a strong Newport team. The Cubs are always chal- JOSHUA BESSEX/EO MEDIA GROUP GIRLS ELIZABETH BARNES, JR. I coached in Nevada (Incline HS), and I’m getting a feel of what’s go- ing on around here. I’d like to see what this area has.” He already knows what the Gulls have, even before he took lenging for the top spot, and they will face an even tougher ¿ght for this year’s title. Seaside brings back some fast swimmers from a year ago, in which the boys’ team ¿n- ished eighth in the team stand- ings at the state meet. “Everything’s going great,” Kadi said after one week of over. “I had the pleasure of work- ing with Alex a little,” he said. “I started a couple home meets here and got to see the team, and it’s good to see those kids back. I think they’re receptive of my training. We just try to make it fun and get ‘em fast quick. “If you know swimming, you have to get them in the water and up to speed really quickly.” On the plus side, “Sam (Beaudoin) is coming back,” Kadi said, referring to the se- nior state quali¿er in four dif- ferent events. Bradley Rzewnicki is an- other key swimmer with state experience. “We also have a real strong girls state relay team, in medley and freestyle,” Kadi said. “I’m really stoked about that.” Kadi is retired U.S. Coast Guard, and was stationed in Astoria from 1985-87. “I was living in Tahoe, and dealing with 40 feet of snow every year gets kind of old,” he said. Seaside “is a good place to be. “When you look at it, the way to a good swimming pro- gram is having a swim club,” which drove Kadi to create the Seaside Swim Team. “Astoria has North Coast (Swim Club), and they’ve got good numbers,” he said. “I started Seaside Swim Team back in January, and our num- bers are at 30. You have to have numbers to have a healthy pro- gram, so we’re building.” FREE WITH EVERY PASSENGER CAR AND LIGHT TRUCK TIRE PURCHASE Free Lifetime Tire & Mileage Care ฀ ฀ ฀ ฀ ฀฀ ฀฀ ฀ ฀ ฀ ฀ ฀ ฀ ฀ ฀ ฀ Locally Owned Since 1919! ฀ ฀ ฀ ฀ ฀ ฀ ฀ ฀ ฀ Our Family Protecting your Family ฀ ฀ ฀ ฀ Ready to serve you at these locations: WARRENTON MCCALL’S TIRE 1167 SE Marlin Avenue 503-861-3252 SEASIDE 2155 S Roosevelt 503-738-9243 8 • Seaside Signal/Cannon Beach Gazette • Winter 2015-16 • Seagull Pride 341 0 H w y 1 01 N G ea rha rt, O R 888-466-7491 968 Com m ercia l Astoria , O R 800-678-581 4 b kn u tsen @ kn u tsen in s.com • w w w .kn u tsen in s.com
