At the time of its construction, the importance of maritime commerce mixed with dan- gerous coastal conditions necessitated a lighthouse in the area. A survey showed fog would obscure the light if the structure was placed directly on Tillamook Head, so focus then shifted to the rocky island a little more than a mile off the coast. After the death of surveyor John Trewavas, who slipped off the rock and drowned, the overwhelming public consen- sus was building a lighthouse on the rock was too danger- ous, according to the exhibit. Nonetheless, the project was completed in secret, with out-of-area crew mem- bers sequestered from the public to prevent them from hearing stories that might deter their participation. Construction on the light- house began in 1879; it took about 575 days to complete. By Jan. 21, 1881, the light- house was of¿cially opera- tional. Teams of as many as ¿ve people kept the lighthouse running. The men who lived there — no women or chil- dren were allowed at the facility — had varying re- actions to their experiences. Some enjoyed the solitude; others despised the isola- The lighthouse was commissioned by the United States Congress in 1878. tion, according to the exhib- it. The lighthouse’s mon- iker, Terrible Tilly, is at- tributed to the facility’s for- mer keepers. They conjured up a title that encompassed the ideas of the Graveyard of the 3aci¿c and the swell- ing waves that would crash against Tillamook Rock and occasionally go over the lighthouse, Johnson said. “It’s a very common sense name,” Wright added. The last keeper of Tilla- mook Rock was Oswald Al- lik. In 1957, the U.S. Coast Guard installed a beacon buoy just off the shores of Tillamook Head, which made the lighthouse obso- lete. “The birds call it home now,” Wright said. Shortly after its deactiva- tion, the obsolete lighthouse was auctioned off to a group of men from Las Vegas and then changed ownership a couple times throughout the years. One couple tried turn- ing it into a vacation rental, a daunting project that never came to fruition. Terrible Tilly’s most re- cent use was as the Eterni- ty at Sea Columbarian. The owners lost their license for the columbarium, however, because of improper stor- age of the urns and a lack of accurate records, Johnson said. It is rumored several urns remain stored at the lighthouse. The facility, which can only be safely accessed by helicopter and is off-limits during the seabird nesting season, is no longer private- ly owned, Johnson said. The U.S Fish & Wildlife Service oversees the rock as a wild- life refuge. It was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1981. “The Tale of Infamous Ter- rible Tilly” exhibit was on display in Cannon Beach from June 2014 to May 2015. The institution re- cently replaced the tempo- rary exhibit with a display on World War II on the Or- egon Coast, which will be up through next February, Johnson said. When Wright heard the Tillamook Rock Lighthouse exhibit might be available, he asked if the Seaside Museum could borrow it, and the Cannon Beach History Center and Museum agreed.
