for ‘Shop Small Saturday’
The Gilbert District will
be participating for the ¿fth
year in the national Shop
Small Saturday campaign
Nov. 28 with an all-day event.
Shoppers will be encouraged
to patronize small and local
businesses.
Although Shop Small Sat-
urday was created by Amer-
ican Express, businesses do
not have to accept American
Express to participate in a
neighborhood event. Neigh-
borhoods across the country
are being encouraged to host
events to bring together their
communities and encourage
local shopping.
At least 15 businesses from
the historic Gilbert District of
downtown Seaside, which en-
compasses the four city blocks
on the corners of Broadway
and Holladay Drive, will par-
ticipate in 2015. The amount
of support given to this event
is amazing, products include
Shop Small canvas tote bags,
buttons, banners, posters and
national advertising, provided
at no charge to participating
businesses.
On Nov. 28, Fairweather
House and Gallery will offer
complimentary gift wrap-
ping, serve a light brunch and
will offer each visitor a gour-
met chocolate bite. Beach
Books will offer specials, as
well. The Riverwalk Thrift
Shop, which is a bene¿t shop
to support the Clatsop Coun-
ty Spay and Neuter program,
will have a drawing for a $50
gift certi¿cate, as will Beach
Puppy.

lery, Gilbert District Gallery,

Members of the Seaside
Fire Department will fan out
across the Holiday Parade
of Lights with boots in hand
for this year’s Fill the Boot
drive. The event takes place
Friday, Nov. 27, at 7 p.m. For
more than si[ decades, ¿re-
¿ghters have fueled MDA’s
mission to ¿nd treatments
and cures for life-threaten-

lar dystrophy and other relat-
ed life-threatening diseases
take away people’s ability to
walk, move, smile, talk and
even breathe.
Funds raised through
the 2015 Seaside Fill the
Boot event support MDA’s
life-enhancing
programs
such as state-of-the-art sup-

Bridge lovers wanted in Seaside
Seaside instructor Susan Kroning learned bridge as a
teenager in Zimbabwe where she grew up, and through
duplicate bridge met her husband and many friends. She
continues to play bridge online once a week with my
daughter who lives in Johannesburg, a 10-hour time dif-
ference.
There are duplicate bridge clubs in Seaside, Astoria
and Long Beach with a game on offer almost daily and
we welcome anyone with open arms, especially new
players.
