Shaw, 85, of Arch Cape, passed unexpect- edly Sept. 23, 2015. She was born to the late Ralph and Lucy Forbes, Oct 25, 1929, in Seattle, Washington. Bar- bara and family often vaca- tioned to Arch Cape, Ore- gon, and eventually acquired property there as the family getaway. She graduated from Queen Ann High School and went on to received her B.A. in art from Lewis and Clark College in 1951. After grad- uation, she married James R. Shaw June 9, 1951, and raised two sons in California until coming home to Arch Cape, as she put it, in 1978. Barbara was very passion- ate about helping women get and further education, and joined the NY PEO (Philan- thropic Education Organiza- tion) 60 years ago in Red- ding, California. To continue this desire, Barbara helped charter the FB PEO Cannon Beach, Oregon chapter, and is the last of 13 original char- ter members. Barbara was constantly Barbara Shaw doing for others. Many of us have been exposed to her resilience and strength in this community, always at the right place, right time, to solve the problem or just be a great friend. For 85 years her life’s passions never slowed, from the everyday walks on the beach, to running her bed and breakfast for 35 years in Arch Cape, maintaining her vegetable garden, playing the organ at the First Church of Christian Science in Gear- hart, going to the garden club, to the book club, and babysitting her granddaugh- ter from time to time. This kind of fortitude, and giving, has left all her friends and family knowing how much she loved us all. Barbara is survived by her husband, James R. Shaw of Arch Cape, Oregon; two sons, James R. Shaw III of Pleasant Hill, California, and Robert S. Shaw of Manzani- ta, Oregon; and two grand- children, Benjamin D. Shaw of Humboldt, California, and Emma M. Shaw of Manzani- ta, Oregon. Memorial contributions can be made to Chapter FB Cannon Beach PEO, award- ed in her name: Women Seeking Advancement, c/o Janet Kenny, P.O. Box 2118, Gearhart, OR 97138-2218. A celebration of Barbara will be held on Sunday, Oct. 25, between 2 and 5 p.m., at the new Arch Cape Fire Sta- tion, 79279 U.S. Highway 101, located just after the Cannon Beach wayside pull- out on the east, coming from the north on Highway 101; from the south, just after the Castle Rock Estates. Gertrude (McKay) Sharp, 95, of Seaside, passed away in her sleep on Sept. 24. Born Sept. 20, 1920, the ¿fth of eight children of Will and Nina McKay of Duluth, Min- nesota, Gertrude grew up on the family estate along the shore of Lake Superior. In 1942, Gertrude earned her nursing degree at St. Luke’s, and was commis- sioned in the U.S. Army. She served during World War II in London, England, where she married Dr. Edward Sharp in 1945. As the boys grew up, Gertrude also worked as a registered nurse in the Phil- adelphia school system, and volunteered in local scouting activities. A sketch artist from youth, she contributed to publications and displays by regional and national medical associations. Following the death of her husband, Gertrude moved ¿rst to the Seattle area, to Gertrude Sharp assist her own long-lived mother. In 1977 Gertrude chose Seaside as her perma- nent home, with its rocky beaches and limitless horizon of water, reminiscent of her original Great Lakes envi- ronment. She enjoyed beach combing and gardening, as well as biking on the Prom or around town. Cards and letters to friends and family would continue to include pen and ink sketches, well into her 90s. But in a genera- tional leap-frog, she also em- braced computers and email, and enjoyed reading classical literature on her Kindle. Gertrude is survived by her three sons, Robert, Don- ald, and Edward; her grand- children, Nathaniel and Ben- jamin; great-grandchildren, Christian and Andrea, niece, Dr. Deborah McKay; and extended family. She later took up golf, and often beat out the wom- en and men in her party in their long drive distances. She loved to watch sports of any kind, and was an enthusiastic supporter of Warrenton High School teams. She brought a cowbell to the home football games and would ring it loud- ly to celebrate the Warrenton team’s touchdowns. Esther encouraged her chil- dren to learn to play musical instruments, and sat through many hours of piano lessons as all four children took their turns with the instructor. She had taken accordion lessons when she was young, and would on occasion play the waltzes that she had learned years ago. She loved to go clam digging, take family camping trips when her chil- dren were young, and never passed up a good crab feed. Esther’s husband, Sam, passed away in December 2012.
