Seaside volleyball looks to battle in a tough league
By Gary Henley

The 2014 Seaside volley-
ball team suffered through
a 1-9 league record last sea-
son, then graduated three all-
league players.
On paper, that doesn’t make
for great expectations for the
2015 Lady Gulls. But Seaside
will put up a tough battle, as
always, as head coach Angie
Huntsman and the Seaside pro-
gram looks to the future with
another young lineup of players.
The Gulls
Seaside has just three se-
niors in the entire volleyball
program, and only one will
be competing on varsity.
Brittany West returns
for her ¿nal season with the
Gulls, who have two juniors,
three sophomores and two

freshmen on the varsity roster.
Seaside will have to re-
place Haylee Dundas, along
with sisters Danielle and Kel-
ly Willyard, now both playing
for Northwest Christian Uni-
versity in Eugene.
A bright spot could be junior
middle blocker Maddi Utti,
who played soccer her ¿rst two
years, but now joins the Gulls
on the volleyball court.
Outside hitter Lucy Bod-
ner is the other junior, while
the sophomore class includes
Alyssia Gonzales, outside
hitter Jetta Ideue and middle
blocker Nikki Mercado.
Setter Annaka Garhofer
and setter/defensive special-
ist Anna Huddleston are the
freshmen.
Kylie McMinn was also
recently added to the roster,
while freshmen swing play-
ers Maddie Jensen and Tori
Tomlin will see varsity action.
The Cowapa
The Gulls opened the
2014 season with three wins
in four matches.
But after a three-game
sweep over Scappoose Sept.
16, Seaside lost nine straight
matches to close out the sea-
son. Eight of the nine losses
were three-game sweeps.
And the league isn’t get
any easier, with Astoria,
Banks and Valley Catholic
vying for the top spot.
