At last month’s meeting, the Seaside School Board of Direc- tors voted unanimously to approve a memorandum of understanding with Clatsop Behavioral Health- care that will allow the organiza- tion to provide its services in the Seaside schools. Doing so will mitigate the need for parents and students to travel to Astoria to re- ceive those services, Superinten- dent Doug Dougherty said. With the agreement, the dis- trict and agency have partnered “to provide mental health preven- tion, assessment and treatment to children and adolescents enrolled at the agency and who attend” a Seaside school, the memorandum states. The county agency has offered this opportunity to all the school districts, some of which also have established an agreement, such as the Astoria School District and the Knappa School District, Dough- erty said, who also noted that the reason for the effort is so “parents and students will be able to access those services directly within our school district.” The partners are seeking to “support a school environment in which all children are emotion- ally prepared, ready to learn and able to progress toward produc- tive adulthood,” the memorandum states. The services were scheduled to begin some time this week. A cli- nician from Clatsop Behavioral Healthcare will have a presence at each of the Seaside schools on various weekdays to conduct ther- apeutic meetings with students. No drop-in students will be allowed and new students seeking treatment and consultation of therapy must be referred to Clatsop Behavioral Healthcare for future services. The clinician, as noted in the memo- randum, also will provide support, consultation and training to teach- ers, administrators and school staff. The schedule is to be deter- mined, Dougherty said. The col- laboration will not cost the school district anything; the schools only need to provide a private room and wireless Internet services for the clinician to conduct meetings with students. The district must provide a space for the clinician to use during summer session, as well. At the meeting, Director of Spe- cial Services Elizabeth Friedman said she was anxious for the program County prescription card program offers discounts Clatsop County has joined a new program to help county residents man- age the cost of prescription medications. Through a partnership with the National Associ- ation of Counties, the free prescription discount card program provides Clatsop County residents with a card that can save them an average of 24 percent off the retail price of prescrip- tion medications. The card is available for use regardless of age or income and can be used by those who do not have insurance or who have prescriptions not covered by insurance. The card can also be used to save money on some pet medications. It is accepted at 65,000 phar- macies nationwide includ- ing all the major chains like Wal-Mart, CVS/phar- macy, Walgreens, Giant, Safeway and Rite Aid. Participating pharmacies also include the majority of community-based, in- dependent pharmacies. The prescription dis- count cards are available in Clatsop County at nu- to begin. Clatsop Behavioral Healthcare also is willing to send someone to Seaside to meet with families on referrals, she added. In other news: • The board voted unanimous- ly to approve a recommendation from the Building and Grounds Committee to declare an emer- gency and allow the district to pursue having a roof replaced on the Gearhart Elementary School’s portable classroom. The roof was blown off during a recent storm. • The board unanimously ap- proved a motion to accept cultural exchange students through a new organization, CCI Greenheart. Board member Hugh Stelson said CCI Greenheart seems to be “the kind of organization the board should endorse.” • Seaside High School juniors and seniors will be attending a special student-centered job fair being put on by Clatsop Economic Development Resources. The job fair is scheduled for April 15 at the Clatsop County Fairgrounds. merous locations. For a complete list of locations go to www.co.clatsop. or.us. The cards can also be printed from www.nacorx. org. Residents can locate the nearest participating pharmacy from the same website or call toll-free at 1-877-321-2652 for assis- tance with the program. The program is admin- istered by CVS Caremark. It is not an insurance plan. “We are pleased to work with counties across the country to bring cost-saving programs to those who need them,” said Riki Hokama, presi- dent of the National Asso- ciation of Counties. “Our ultimate goal is to help counties and their resi- dents, and efforts like this offer them an important service.” Clatsop County joins more than 1,400 counties across the country offering the prescription discount card program to residents. Since the program’s incep- tion in 2005, participating counties have saved their residents more than $586 million on the cost of their prescriptions.
