12A • March 20, 2015 • Seaside Signal • seasidesignal.com Scene and Heard CLAIRE LOVELL Americans really need a dress code What has happened to style in the U.S. of A? Maybe we could even call it a “dress code.” Ha. Old people like me most- ly just cover their bodies with something warm and comfort- able — usually slacks, a T-shirt and a sweater with a rain hood- ie and gloves for cold weather. What we see on the street is something else again. Very few people “dress up” anymore. Clothes look mostly like they were the first three piec- es picked out of the laundry bas- ket. No matter if they are mixed summer and winter wear or in any way coordinated. Important men on TV and elsewhere have quit wearing ties. Too many of them choose scruffy beards or bald heads. What a picture! There are other pictures ev- erywhere, too. Tattoos, that is. They’re unattractive, but I don’t lose hope. Maybe a time will come again when ties and shirt- tails are in; pants are up to the waist and caps are on so that the visor shades your eyes. I guess it’s all a form of rebellion. Personal pick My candidate for president is Bill Whittle, a truly conser- vative speaker, educator and student of history. I came upon him by accident, trying WR ¿QG D ZDWFKDEOH SURJUDP on TV. He is so informed and so inspirational. It was truly interesting when he described how George Washington would dress if he were president today, in an Ar- mani suit and $900 shoes, etc. I had never heard of him. He told us the things that are wrong about our country and what CLAIRE LOVELL VKRXOGEHGRQHWR¿[WKHP² all so reasonable. He painted, too, and traveled some. Many of his works are about Seaside and its environs. Below is one of his expressive word pictures of spring. Tsunami Skippers compete in Washington Spring Song Suddenly from glooming winter bogs, infectious, laughing thunder of the frogs. From Earth, high sky and blossom blowing bough hear the happy shout, “Spring’s here now!” When sung so gaily, nothing can be wrong in ecstatic thrilling of the redwing song, and glowing from April’s spring warm hills, the golden trumpet of the daffodils. Laugh Line: There was the person who sent 10 puns to friends with the hope that at least one of the puns would make them laugh. No pun in 10 did. KATHERINE LACAZE PHOTO Seaside’s Tsunami Skippers Jump Rope Team successfully competed in the Bainbridge Island Invitational in Washington. The team includes, back row from left, Abby Albright, Bella Sam- uelson, Audrey Colburn, Emma Meyer, Annika Wunderlich, Nevaeh Hazen, Karen Wing, Desirae Williams and Ella Miller; middle row from left, Lo- relei Abernathy, Emma Taylor, Gabe Wright, Kierra Gastelum, Annabelle Long, Emily Philbrook, Victo- ria Soprano and Kylie Zeman; third row from left, Alona Wisenhunt, Savannah Ciseneros, Samantha Sampson, Grace Andrew, Hannah Brien and Olivia Esnard; and front row from left, Ella Boles and Daniel Albright.
