er victory, says the American Press.
Chiefly due to the stand taken by the

Wiley, head of the bureau of chem­
istry of the department of agriculture,

SAULT STE MARIE, Aug. 9.—To­
day, the day originally intended for
her hanging, Mrs Napolitano was re­
moved from the hospital to the jail.
Apparently the woman did not recall
that this was to have been her execu­
tion day. The jailers are not men­
tioning the fact.
Mrs. Napolitano frequently kissed
her cooing girl baby, which remains
with its mother till the latter is re­
moved to the Kingston penitentiary,
for which no date has been set. The
child will be placed with the Chil­
dren’s Aid Society.

GIBRALTAR, Aug. 9.—The French
mail steamer Emir collided with the
British steamer Silverton in a fog this
morning in Gibraltar straits. The
former sank in five minutes. The Sil­
verton rescued some of the passengers
and crew and brought them to Gib­
raltar.
Ninety-three passengers and mem­
bers of the crew perished on the
Emir. The Silverton lowered all of
her boats, but was only able to rescue
twenty-three. The bow of the Silver-
ton was stove in, and only the hardest
kind of pumping enabled her to reach
the harbo'.
