to plan and build dairy barns that

be taught this year at the Oregon Ag
ricultural college In a course in farm
structure just Introduced.
Thi- students will learn bow to d«>-
sign tlieir own houses, barns, grain-
arys, silos and other farm buildings,
where- to place- them; how they
should be constructed, and tbe cost
of both materials and construction.
An unusual feature of tbe instruction
will be that which will aid students
to draw plans In class for buildings,
solving spoclal problems of their own
home farms, such as barns on hill
sides or on low ground.
The various uses uf concrete on the
farm, with practical laboratory work
in tbe making of concrete floors,
walks and fence posts will also form
a part of tbe students' instruction.
Problems in fencing, including the
relative merit and cost of various
sorts of materials and different de
signs will be an Interesting part of
tbocouree. which will include as well
a comparison of the efficiency of good
and bad roads, and the methods of
construction and maintenance of
good roads in rural districts.

VALLEJO, Oct. 10. Hereafter the
entire interior of the saloons of Val
lejo will be visible to those walking
on the streets of the city. So strong

several months past against private
booths and boxes in both restaurants
and saloons that the board of city
trustees has unanimously passed an
ordinance
prohibiting
any
such
booths, and. moreover, decreeing that
all doors to saloons shall bo provided
with clear glass panels of a sufficient
slr.c to permit of the Interior of the
place being visible to the people on
the sidewalk and prohibiting any
screens or other obstruction being
placed in any way that would conceal
any part of the premises.
Provision is made in the ordinance
for the immediate revocation of any
license in the event of any of the
above provisions being violated.

is filled with afterdamp, and the lives
of tbe rescuers are Imperilled, and
they have been repeatedly repulsed.
The explosion occurred five miles
from the mouth of the mine. Tbe
ouly chance to escape is an old tun
nel li-adlng Into tbe Englevllle mine
adjoining. Several years ago, during
th" Englevllle fire, this tunnel was
walled up with masonry. A number
of men are tearing away the masonry
wall in an effort to reach the en
tombed miners.
It Is believed tbe explosion was
due to a collection of dust. The mine
has always been considered safe.
Blasting is forbidden, and no powder
was allowed, as coal can be knocked
down with a pick.
All last night
women paced the streets, asking, "are
there any news?” The answer always
was that rescue was improbable. Hu
man life cannot exist In the gas-filled
tunnels. One Italian woman, whose
husband was entombed, bade her
eight children kneel in prayer. In
tending to kill them as they prayed.
Neighbors Interferred and prevented
her from accomplishing her purpose.
Most of the entombfKl men are mar
ried.
Rescuers thlB afternoon found the
tunnel so badly caved that it will
take a week to reach the point of tbe
explosion, and all hope of rescuing
anyone alive has been abandoned.
