A bead of some chemical substance Is shaken to the top of ♦ ♦ the instrument, and as the temperature grows colder it falls, but ♦ ♦ when the sun gets hotter It does not ascend again, but remains at the ♦ ♦ level reached during the coldest Period, until It is shaken to the top ♦ ♦ again. In this way the highest and the lowest temperatures are as- ♦ ♦ certalned during the day.
