The la’-d holders from both valleys were nearly all represented. The arrest last Wednesday of John Connolly as tge perpetrator of the crime of setting fire to the Have Shook barn and house was a great surprise to everybody, and ft brought with it a distinct sense of relief to the public mind—which had been turned in another direction. Then it was thought that the officers had made the arrest on evidence that wa> too slight to enable them to hold man; but lately this has changed, at.d it is now reported that the man has confessed, and stated to the officers, or someone else, that he was hired to do the work. These rumors and statements almost surpass belief, as they indicate a mind bereft of every humane instinct and feeling. It is stated as a fact that Connally scarcely knew Dave Shook, and that he certainly had no personal grudge against him; conse quently he must be a low-down wretch to accept a bribe for such a fiendish piece of villainy; but it is harder to believe that anyone could be so wrought up by envy and malice as to inspire its perpetration is al- most beyond conception And the neighbors and public generally await developments with horror not U n- mingled with doubt.
