1900.
Puguhst Corbett is finding much
support among New York democrats
ns a candidate for the I'nited Slates
senate.
There is no reason why
brawn and gristle should not compote
favorably with the wealth of that
body of pecuniary aristocracy.
We came from the corn and popu
list state of Nebraska, where a repub
lican candidate stands about as much
show as a snow ball would in Texas.
AVe had become hardened to seeing
republicans go through the tortures
of defeat and hence resuscitate and
regain our equilibrium more quickly
after witnessing such an emotional
and trying ordeal than we otherwise
would.
Next in order in the line of politics
is the presidential campaign which
will soon be on in full force. Having
its state and county election in .lune.
Oregon has no local interests inc lv-
ed in the battle of ballots next No
vember. It is different in must'of
the eastern states.
They do the
whole thing at once, and their way is
much cheaper and altogether better.
During years of presidential eani-
<
paigns, Oregon must bear the I? in-
creased expense and annoyance of
two elections.
%
Were the republicans never defeat
ed. how in thunder could they learn
to appreciate the pain ancLanguish of
defeat? Isn't adversity a good thing
occasionally to teach one a proper es
timate of success?
I.et a man live
along in riches and ease for an ex
tended period and he becomes careless
and indifferent and an easy victim of
misfortune.
Sooner or later he goes
down to wreck and despair. Then he
energetically goes
ut retrieving
success. Probably it is the same
with a political organization. Con
tinued success nukes it rcckkss and
too confident and it falls an easy prey
to thè alert and hungry opposition.
And then, reanimated, it tackles the
task of recuperating.
An Exchange says: More than one
thousand divorced Californians have
been wedded at Beno. Nevada, in the
past three years.
The business is on
the increase and the little city is pre
pared for the regular trade.
Justice
Linn alone has united over three
hundred divorced Californians.
But
the days of his monopoly are over for
there are now active, vigorous preach
er competitors in his way.
Two by
two they arrive over the state line
with small grips, go to the Riverside
hotel, the sign of which is painted
high, in full view, on the gable ends
of a three-storv, ell-built house,
above the second-story windows.
Clerk Porter is called and goes on is
suing licenses up in the second thous-
and.

for several years the mutton sheen
has been crowding out the woolsheep,
and some arrangement by which the
Massachusetts farmer could market
his mutton in Boston in competition
with mutton from the Chicago pack

raising. The ccntrolling element in
these things is apt to be adaptablity;
that is. tlie line of least resistance.
Under any and all tariffs sections

A REPLA TO LETTERS.
Two gentlemen residing at Halsey.
Or., eaclt wrote a letter to AV. Mc
Clure a few days ago. and made in
quiries as to this county, being desir
ous of coming and locating here. Mr.
McClure has handed us the letters
and requests us to answer them.
In reply, then, to the letters, we
will s v that Klamath county is one
of the best in the world for stock
raising.
The land is rich, although
in some localities it needs more irri
gation. Wages for labor are high,
although the demand for it is not so
great as it will I k - when the railroad
com. s. as then a great amount <f
building and improvement will givean
abundance of employment to every
mechanic and laboring man.
As Loth of these gentlemen are per- ■
haps aware, this county is favored
with one of the grandest tracts of
timber in Oregon, among which are
sugar pine, yellow pine, fir, etc., all
very valuable.
As soon as railroad
communication can be opened with
the outside world, so that timber and
lumber can be sent to market, there
will for twenty-five years to come be
a great field for a hundred new enter-
pris s. Immense sawmills will sprii g
up in every direction, and thes? will
require more stores and shops, more,
indeed, of everything and every busi
ness which are necessary in a densely
settled country. There is one mill
already contemplated, which will em
ploy 250 hands.
This will mean
nearly as many families, and these in
sure the building of a town of which
the mill will lx- the nucleus.
Along
the imnier.se fallsand rapidsof Klam
ath river at this place, it may reason
ably lx? predicted that not only saw
mills. but tanneries, paper mills mak
ing paper from white lir timber, ma
chine shops, furniture and box fac
tories, woolen mills and many other
.iniilar enterprises will be made prof
itable.
The best way for a man who thinks
of coming here, is to first come and
look over the field and see for him
self the prospects for the future.
Come and make a cool and impartial
investigation and see what business
would be tlie best to engage in.
This is a healthy count ry, the people
are friendly and hospitable, and when
the railroad comes, it will rightfully
>>e considered the best part of the
state to locate in.
