BOW CO OK WITH THE STORY

Bad decided to rent a furnished
place because Dlek was only
temporarily located in Lake City
The main office ot the company

but Dick had been In Lake City
for more than a year superintend

fore everything would be com-

TAe Beat addresses on the list
peeved equally discouraging. At
last they stopped before an old
' lir aas oa the opposite aide of the
city. R stood at the corner of a
aaa thoroughfare and tree-lined
aids street.
The woman who owned the
boaoo was a widow. She and ber
two sons and daughter occupied
one section of the rambling old
mansion and tha rest bad been
dtrMed into apartments. Once
Inside, Eve bad to admit the
charm ot the place, The walls
were thick and the ceilings high.
Doorways were arched and the
heary rrorT woodwork was mag
nificent. "Why these rooms are lovely 1
We must take them," gasped Eve,
much to ber own surprise. "And
I think Ire can move in today.'

- rpHET returned to the aflra--l
mar, checked out and stowed
their belongings into the rumble
seat ot the roadster. Then Dick
stopped at a delicatessen for
chicken sandwiches, coffee, a
bottle ot cream and a pint ot
aherbert,
Mrs. Brooks let him make the
coffee in her big, old-fashioned
kitchen. She loaned them some
dishes and cups and Ere set out
the food, at was run eating by
candlelight, she declared. Dick
beamed at her. "Tomorrow," he
said, "we'll bare a real dinner
ia onr Irst home, won't we,
sweetheart?"
"Wiry, yes," said Ere soberly.
She had not the slightest idea
how it was to be managed since
she had to be at the office until
five o'clock.
Aa she watted for the trolley
at the corner next morning she
turned to look at the house. It
was downright shabby from the
outside. Ere was not so pleased
with her new home as she had
been the night before.
But she forgot all that In a tre
mendously busy morning. At
noon sbe purchased an orchid
linen luncheon aet but there was
no time for further shopping.
"Oh, bother!" sbe told herself.
"I can't do everything. We'll Just
have to get oar meals out tor a
while,"
Bat when sbe reached home that
Bight she was greeted by an
aroma shs loathed cooking cab
bagel In great consternation she
hurried to the kitchen. There
stood Dick wearing a bine flannel
shirt with turned up collar and
a pair ot old tweed trousers. He
was grating horseradish. On the
stove stood a steam pressure
cooker.
"DIckl" gasped Eve. "What
on earth f"
"Take off your wraps, dear,"
he said. "We can have dinner
in a few minutes. Everything is
done but the horseradish."
Ere obeyed. She wanted to
cry. But she laid the table for
two and Dick triumphantly pro
duced his offering.
On the table was a platter of
ham aurrounded by carrots,
onions, cabbage and potatoes. Eve
looked at it without speaking.
"What's the matter?" Dick
asked.
"I'm not hungry."
"Well, that's too bad," Dick
answered. "Don't you want to
.py a bit anyhow? This horse
radish sets everything off just
right."
e e e
rVE arose and left the room,
- murmuring under her breath,
"Ob, this Is Impossible!" But
Dick went on with his meal, ap
parently undisturbed.
Eve sat In the dark living room
looking out at the street. Dick
entered much Inter. "Ob, there
yoa are!" he exclaimed, turnlnc
on the lamp. "Hare some candy,
Eve?" And with a smile he held
out a box of chocolate centered
butter creams.
Eve grudgingly allowed herself
no of them.
V iJSfs
Dick threw a leg over the side
ot his arm chair, lighted hia pipe
and went on. "U'e going to be
nice .to have a wife to cook (or
me. 'I used to get so tired ot
hotel and restaurant food that
sometimes I've taken an apart
ment with a kllchenet Just so I
could do my own cooking."
"Indeed! Where did yon learn
to cook?" she ssked la a low
voice. '
"Oh, in the woods. Spent a
rummer up north peeling bark for
a medicine company when I was
a kid. Fine training."
"Ton like the woods, dont
you?" Eve asked, in spite ot her
self. "I'll take you up north some
time; see if you don't like it too,"
Dick said in answer. "I used to
go up in the fall with a group ot
friends. But that was different
Then we stopped at a lodge and
there were cooks to prepare the
food. That was wonderful, too.
But you never really learn the
woods until yoa bare to fend for
yourself."
"How much did yon pay for
that cooker," Eve demanded sud
denly. When he told her she gasped.
"It cooks so quickly It will pay
for Itself In gas saved," he de
fended. "But even It It didn't,
think ot the convenience! , When
yoa get home at night yon won't
nave much bother getting a meal
tola way."
e e e
rtrCK thought he beard Eve
mutter under her breath,
"Boiled cabbage, turnips, ear
rots !"
"What's that?" ke demanded
sharply.
"Wed, my mother always
cooked boiled vegetables when I
wasnt at home. Ton might eat
them at noon if you like them so
weU," she said angrily.
"But yon cant buy a vegetable
dinner the way I like It," he an
swered. "And besides I was hop
ing to get away from restaurant
cooking after 1 married."
"What you wanted was s first
slase cook and not a wife!" Eve
accused. "Ton should have con
sidered my qualifications more
thoroughly K yon wanted a mere
cook."
"Well," Dick answered slowly,
; "I did expect to get a home."
Ere had had no dinner and she
I felt hungry. Hence she answered
sarcastically, "No doubt! A home
- Oiled with little cabbages. Well,
I've heard ot women who read
nothing but cook books but I
. don't intend to spend my life try
ing to disguise groceries!"
Dick took a long puff on bis
pipe before answering. "I'm be
ginning to wonder," be said, "Just
what you expected to put into a
heme when yon married. What
were your ideas ot the responsi
bilities of marriage, anyhow?"
Eve could not answer. She bad
bought herself beyond reproach.
, That there might be something to
said for Dick's side ot the argu
nent also, she had not realised.
He put on his bat and coat and
went to the door.
"Where are yon going?" Eve
demanded.
"Out for a breath ot air," be
told her.
"I should think you'd need it
when the house is filled with
cabbage!"
He disappeared without an
swering. Eve burst into tears but
nevertheless hurried to the
kitchen and helped herself to
some food. She waa frightened
because Dick had left her. Her
marriage waa taking on an en
tirely new aspect. Waa it going
i to be the lark she had antici
pated?

"Yankees" really means Eng
lish. When the first English
settlers came to America, the
nearest the Indians could come
to pronouncing the name was
"Yengees." That was twisted to
"Yankees" and applied later to
Americans.
