Each tchool has its peculiar ity thle year Just a It did last. The Southern California Trojans, 1932 coast champions " and the leading team In the . United 8tates, will be con ; fronted by a perpetual foe 1 over-contldenc. The TJ. C L. A. Brnlna will present themselves to Bill Spaulding, head coach, wond ering how long It will be be- fore they can eacape the dark ? horse division and be hailed .-' as serious contenders. Farther north In Callfornlk Stanford will be considering how a new coach and a new atmosphere will blend with the ambition tor a title. The tint practice of the year at Palo Alto will appear strange t without the presence of the venerable "Pop" Warner. And Tiny Thomhill will be labor ing to make the school forget Its former and famous coach. Across the bay at Berkeley, the California Bears have the problem ot shsplng a new system. Orders hare com down to Bill Ingram, definite ly on trial this season, to for get some ot his conservatism and inject more color and dash lata the California Tar- Oregon wW attempt to esti mate how much Improvement ; ean be drawn out ot the same men who played last season. Kot a man ot outstanding tal ent arrived from the 1951 freshman team, so Prink Cal Hson, moving Into his second year as head coach, most look to the experience of last ' season for the success of this. A lakewarm situation at Oregon State won't arouse the, : wearers of the Orange to any particular excitement. No one expects to sea Lonnle Stlner, . Paul J. Bchiasler's successor, develop even a near-champion Stlner least of all. Washington State broods carefully over Its status ss the : : certain runner np to Southern . California and the possible .. champion ot the coast when mid-December arrives. Babe Holllngbery, turning into one of the best-known cosches In , the country, will produce his enstomary team husky, , conservative and consistent. Jimmy Pbelan offers a per plexing situation at the TJnl , versity ot Washington. It was pretty generally admitted that Jimmy's slowly developing ' system arrived In a huge way toward the close of the season la 1911. He won a mighty nice share ef games and those ' ha lost were sensationally iose ones. But bow Washington ssdly reflects that many ot the It 11 regulars have departed. Jimmy, who threatened to resign end for a long time refused to sign a new contract, won't have too bright an outlook, e e e There's not the slightest tint at worry at either Mon tana or Idaho. Coaches In those two schools enjoy ex ceptionally hsppy positions. Their alumni know the chanc at winning a title Is remote, so If the season can bring In one or two conference vic tories, then it is a happy snc-i Just one week from Satur ' ' day the major teams on the ' coast will be In action. The most Interesting early ; season contest will be between i California and Santa Clara. There California will have a difficult struggle with a team ready to match the power ot the average conference mem ' bar. Washington will tackle an ' other tough opponent In Gon : saga. Southern California will en gage two teams, Occidental and Whittler, In light warm-up sessions. Los Angeles Junior college . and San Dlgeo will provide entertainment for U. C. L. A. Oregon will throw Its whole squad against Llnfleld and Oregon State will take on a double header against Wil lamette and Southern Oregon Normal. . n .. T? INTERNATIONAL HOUSE T?
