BOSTON. Mas. "Aug. II.
Sarah Palfrey, the llttl flrl
who. arcording to Helen Will
Moody, will succeed her as th
premier femlnln tennl player
ot the United States, 1 just
one ot a bit ha PPT family ot
tennis players.
When the stumbled the
tnrdr Helen Jscoos ot Cali
fornia from the throne
naii'i national singles chim
pioa at Ssabnghi. and went
oa to win her first Wightmsn
Cap liniiea match sgsinst Peg
gy Striven, ahe added another
lustrous chapter to the al
ready glittering "story ot Pal
trey tennia family.
Sarah m one ot Ore sisters,
each ot whom has woa nation
al titles. There Is one boy.
John O, Jr a lad of 14. now
attending school, who holds
ire state championships for
boys, and show promise of
being a great player later on.
Tha Palfrey children Inher
ited an aptltnde for the same.
John O. Palfrey, the tether, a
Boston attorney, played con
siderable tennis in his youth,
and both he and his wife en
gaged in the game daring their
married Ufa. At the Palfrey
country home in Sharon, Mass,
all the children were contin
ually on the court.
Polly is the oldest ot the
Palfrey slaters. Playing with
Fanny Curtis she won the
Massachusetts deublee in 1114
at tha age ot 17. and the same
year captured the national
outdoor championship for girls
at Philadelphia.
Elisabeth "Lee," it. wob
tha state doubles, playing with
Mis Curtis the year after Pol
ly grabbed the honors. In
127 she won her major title
by Ttctory la the national In
door girls' tournament.
Mlanne. 21. and Sarah. 2.
are the two best players of
the family. la the early days
at their play Mlanne. because
at her age advantage, woa
most of her games with Sarah,
bat the latter has gradually
forged to the front to be the
more Impressive ot the two.
la 1119. when she was 18.
Mlanne woa the national in
door Junior stogies, and in
1110 she captured the senior
title. She and Sarah played
together to win the national
outdoor junior doubles la
im, '2S and '!.
With all this It seems that
the Palfrey tennis talent must
b ran out. But Joanna,
yoangeat of the me, is com
ing along.
She met with her first not
able success in 19 JO, st the
age ot It. Then, pairing up
with Sarah, she got into the
U. 6. doubles finals. The re
sulting win made her the fifth
Palfrey girl to win a national
title. Jnst how tar along the
championship road she'll go Is
hard to say. She's living more
time to golf now than to ten-,
ais.
Meanwhile, young Johnny is
going merrily forward In the
tennis world.
When he was 12, he got
into the state doubles finals
for boys and was beaten in
three sets. But he came back
and won the boys' singles snd
doubles last year and again
this year.
None ot the Palfrey tennis
players is Urge. They are all
nearly of the sams siie tire
feet fire lnchee and exceed
ingly fast. All bear a strong
resemblance.
e e
Sarah, with her current vic
tories, is the heroine ot the
family.
This girl whom Hsiel
Hotchklis Wiglitman terms the
"most fascinating snd graceful
player on the courts." is pos
sessor of 24 national titles.
Junior snd senior.
Her standing this year may
be affected somewhat by her
loss to Dorothy Round, Brit
ain's No. 1 player in the
Wlthtmaa Cup play, taking In
to consideration the fact that
her teammete. Helen Jscoue,
the girl she defeated In the
national women's singles, de
feated Miss Round in the first
round of singles.
But Sarsh Is not the sea
soned player Miss Jacobs Is.
A few more years on her
shoulders snd she'll be ready
to step into the shoes ot Helen
Wills Moody.
