taken amonsr our babies durinK
each summer. Dysentery and
cholera Infantum brought Its
terrible scourge into every com
munity, and babies died In spite
of all that could be done for
them. (Some of this tragedy was
due to unsanitary living condi
tions, but most of It was deriv
ed directly from contaminated
milk. Most of these babies were
being fed on raw milk. Moth
ers did not know thst all mtlk
must be sterilized before It is
safe to nse. It Is due to pas
teurization that our babies now
have a fair chance to survive
their Jnfanthood."
State Patient
Takes Own Life
SALEM. June 1(F) Pearl
Devore, 62, banged herself with
a belt obtained from another
patient at the State hospital yes
terday. Attendants said several other
attempts to take her own life
had been made since her com
mittment from Eugene February'
28 of this year. The body will
be sent to Eugene where rela
tives live.

TO REDUCE TAXES
ALTTRAS. Calif. The Tax
payer, league of this city with
J. T. Negley as chairman and
W. B Williams as secretary, af
ter months of study of the local
situation, presented to the city
council plans for redaction in
city taxes.
Among the plans was a recom
mendation of refinancing the
various bond Issues by a heavy
reduction in the capital amounts
of the bonds. Another drastic
recommendation of the organisa
tion was that the city's electric
power bin be cut in hslf. Power
for lights and the city's pumping
and sewer plant Is supplied by
the California Service company.
Recommendations were also
made for a reduction in salary
of all city officials and an
tire budget was presented by the
league covering alt city expenses.
House Stealing
Charged to Two
CEDARVILLE. Calif. A pecu
liar charge of theft was brought
this week against Mrs. A. J. Ar
nel and her son. Oral J. Arnet
of Surprise Valley, when they
were charged with stealing two
house located on the old Alturas-
Cedarvllle highway and moving
them away.
The complaint of house steal
Ing was brought by Attorney J.
S. Hen rl erson and J. E. O ray.
The houses formerly belonged to
Mrs Arnel who stated that she
would plead her own case In
the superior court of the county
at her trial on a charge of grand
theft on June 12.

mount Is now exhibited at Fort
