race for the governorship,
is now our governor. His
trained hand yeterday took
over the wheel of the ship
of state as the legislature
convened.
In his message to the
combined house and senate
and to the people of the
state Governor Meier
showed that he has been
studying state problems and
that he has a firm grasp of
conditions and a thorough
understanding of state busi
ness. His message contained
the points which he advoc
ated when elected by the
people on the platform and
principles of the late Geo.
W. Joseph, republican
primary nominee. Radical
demands of any kind were
lacking in the recommenda
tions as were the often
times "wild" ideas which
are not bacd on fact or
reason but upon political
promises made by those
seeding office.
Oregon's governor i s
trained in business and has
demonstrated that he is
fully capable of being the
chief executive of the larg
est business in the state.
Oregon's governor has in
his appointments so far
shown rare ability to select
and command the best suit
ed persons for state posi
tions. Frank Lonergan, speaker
of the house of representa
tives, and Willard Marks,
president of the state pen
ate, are leaders of recog
nized ability in those
groups. The election of each
without strenuous contests,
together with the harmoni
ous message of Governor
Meier will go a long yay
toward starting the legisla
tive session and Governor
Meier toward a successful
completion of the work
which must be done.
