Some of those prob lems arc of long standing and have been before many sessions.. This session con fronts a demand for action from the people. And, fur thermore there is state fin ancing before the boys that cannot be longer delayed. While this may be the paramount issue, there are many others of importance. We have some changes that are' needed in the irrigation laws of the state, and there must be something done with the "Luper plan" of handling the crippled irri gation districts, provided thei' state continues to take a ,hand in irrigation. If it should not do so it means a probable complete loss 01 ail state money inui iius been expended for interest on i irrigation bonds, for under the law the state paid the? interest for five years on the bonds of several pro jects. This is not so import- antj as the districts and their future. The state cannot re- i move its guiding hand from these vast undertakings which now are partly set . tied. The settlers went onto the land in good faith. Con ditions arose which prevent-! ti A iiam frrtm tnnltino" onnH ! n : ., . . . -..ithls lob on the farm aay a city out. me state ta.ii.ui qu.i , ana permit inese projects to go back to sagebrush. Not1 at all. Statesmanship is re- quired at the coming session some very gooa men nave been elected both to the ; house and the senate. As far ' as political parties are con- cerned they. mean little in i the legislature. But two democrats will hold seats in the senate. ' - " ' . f EDITORIAL ' The Death Trap ON SATURDAY night the Merrill highway is a deathtrap due to drunken drivers who constant ly harass the law abiding public and make that highway unsafe for travel. The prime cause of this terrible condition of affairs is an all-night dame at Merrill, known throughout the county as a place for the night hawks to congregate and swill down moonshine. It is a disgrace to any community and especially is it a disgrace to a fine community like Merrill, for the people who permanently reside in that section of the county are law-abiding, thrifty, hospitable, folks. Just why Merrill should be cursed with the "all night dance" is not known, but it is, and along with that curse comes the unsafe highway from Klamath Falls to that community. Notice is served here and now that drunken driv ers on highways must go in this part of the state. Probably the first move is to clean up Merrill's dance hall, and any others that insist on all night car ousals. Also, the roadhouse and the beer garden have become menaces which endanger lives of people who drive the highways, and we say to those who are making their money by operating such deathtraps the .price is too great to pay to huve such pests in a community and the battle now starts With the whole layout. So, " gird . your loins, you night hawk operators who run your dances all night; you road hotsse magnates who sell your poison to drunken drivers causing every law-abiding citizen who drives a car to suffer danger of death on the highways; you beer garden owners who sell your vile liquor and reek in your own odors we say, square yourselves, for the battle is on right now and will continue until the highways of Klamath county are safe for the people to drive- any time of day or night. Officers can cope with the situation if backed "by public sentiment. The "list of dead and dying" from Saturday night drunken drivers must be lessened. First, the law-abiding people are calling for the license of every drunken driver captured and the official who does not take that license from the driver is going to be held up before the public and tried in the court of public opinion. The state law is drastic against the drunken driver and the driver's license is the. key to stop this practice. Jail sent ences and fines are never so severe a punishment as to take from the driver his license and thus prevent him from driving an automobile in the future. This is the first notice that the fight is on and that the all-night Merrill dance and other dances that run' all night most mend 'thfeir Svays.
