In operation on tho Klamath I
Indian reservation..
The protective associa (Ion!
camps will be located In the
Meryl creek section where an in
festation covering 60 sections
has done great damage to stand-

Across the reservation line, an
Indian service camp attempt to
clean out an infestation which
Is also serious.
Concurrent control activities !
of reservation authorities and
private Interests will go a long
way towards stemming the ad
vancing tide of pine bettlea in
the eastern! Klamath territory.
said Duncan McLean, head of
pine beetle operations for the
protective association.
"The beetle recognises no
state lines or reservation boun
daries," said Mr. Mclean. "While
on one side an area might be
cleaned out, beetles from uncon
trolled side of the line would.

Usual control methods will fol
low.. The infested tree will be
felled, the bark stripped off the
tree and burned along the naked
tree trunk. This method of con
trol has been followed in Klam
ath for the past seven years, and,
although costly to tlmbermen. Is
the only method yet approved.
In the meantime, beetle con
trol operations In Modoc county
will soon be under way by the
Pickering Lumber company
which bid ' in a large forest
service unit. According to Al
'turas Lumber company's plans,
line beetle Infested sections will
be logged oft first, in effect,
this method would In itself, be a
successful control measure. F.
