rescue workers.

and explorer. Byrd had been nt
the 33rd street station, riding to
wards Times Square, at the mo
ment of the accident. All power
was shut off and soon there was
word that a disaster had oc
curred.. Byrd, with several fel
low passengers, had broken from
the train, made his way to Times
Square, and engaged In rescue
work.
By 7:30 p. m. 250 workmen
