Tunney Barks .Farewell Speech (Coxttlsuaed fiosa Pace One) among America's pen-pushers and typewriter thumpers at last. In his dual personality of hap py fiance and unhappy box fight er,' Gentleman Gene arrived at the"pler 'at 1:14 p. m., exactly half an .hour before sailing. ' Brother ' Present ' 'Hi brother. Detective Tom Tunney, a man' of fewer words than the $2,000,000 champion, waa with him. along with three policemen sweltering in blue uul forms. " "" ' A mob of goofs was waiting at the pier, and they made tor Gene like the sisterhood used to make for the 'late Rudolph Valentino. They pushed around him, despite the police, slapped him ,on the back, pulled at his clothes, paw ed him. and assured him that he "was the boy." ' ; ' 1 Tunney Gets Mauling Tunney tried to be nice about the mauling." In ' tact, ba was nice. He lifted, .Ms hat wnen ho could get it' off his head In the roughhouse and murmured, "thank you," and "good of you" to the carrion. , ,' Once aboard the ' Mauretania the champion ' scuttled .like a prize, rabbit to the s'atoroom ot Leonard Hanna, a nephew of the former boss of the Republican party, and a member of the se lect party traveling with him to Europe. Barks at Reporter He braced his feet wide apart and fixed a delegation of report ers with the stare of the ancient mariner. ' The champion barked like, a second lleutenaut of ma rines who waa still slightly damp behind the ears .and was afraid the first sergeant suspected It. "I'll do all , the talking now," commanded the champion of champions. "I won't answer any questions, and I don't want' any questions put, because 1 don't In tend to answer. "This is simply because. In the first place, I haven't got the tlm And secondly, there are 30 reporters, here, at least, who will ask at least 2,400 questions. 'ot In Business "I have. not committed myself to any business. Any reports to that effect are untrue. At the present, I am not considering any business offers, and I will not consider any until I return. If any reports come out during my absence abroad of any business affiliations they are erroneous." The champion was breathing easier but the reporters were still on the ropes. ' ' "It's Tough Medicine" "I am going abroad for a nice trip," he added, "and I hope to j get away from many things." j "The newspapers and fight, people?" queried an upstart. j "There, no questions," admon ished the champion. "It's tough medicine," he, add-! ed, "but It's all a part of the1 game." ' j This one was ,a puzzler. It broke np the party and the Mauretania departed shortly thereafter. For your Frlgldalre call E.
