Beside the inestimable bene
fit to Klnmalh Kalis and Its
existing industries, the now line
will open up the Tule Lake
basin, one of the richest farm
ing sections in the United States,
until now entirely dependent on
motor transportation.
The Tule Lake country, con
taining the town of Morrill
and Malin. It I said, has been
developed to littlo more than a
quarter of lis potential produc
tivity because of lack of rail fa
cilities. Ninety-six thousand acres of
rich land await the plow of the
homesteader In this section, ac
cording to the rlgures of the
reclamation service.
The Modoc Northern and the
Cascade line were two of the
great rail projects- outlined Ly
H. H. Harrlman, who, aa presi
dent of tho Southern Pacific,
battled the doughty head of the
Northern lines, James J. Hill,
for the control of. the west.
Harrlman saw the eventual
need for both lines long before
hi death: but construction of
the last In date, but not In Im
portance, of the two line, has
been deViyed until 20 oears
after the death of the empire
builder. '
The Modoc Northern extension,
which will cost $4,000,000 Is ono
of the four most Important piece
of railway construction west of
the Rocky mountains during the
pastMen years, the other three
being the Moffatt tunnel of the
Denver and Rio Urando Weslorn.
