The east and north are giving it up because their supply of raw material has been ex hausted. In the west we have the supply and trans portation has been the only thing that held us back. Now that is being bridged and we have the paper con cerns flaunting all kinds of investments before the pub lic. Paper stock is good stock provided the concern is pro perly managed. It is the one thijig left on the Pacific coast that will' make big money for investors. But, be careful. There are many of ferings now that mean little and be sure you are in the right concern before you in vest in paper mill stock. jM present the trust con trols the paper product. Itj will allow you to make pup, but don't try to make paper unless you have an feement with the finan cial heads which today con trol the paper output They hae a way of, squeezing oujt the independent mill that is both adroit and cun ning, and they will squeeze you out. If you don't be lt sre it, try starting a paper mll and see; how quickly something happens to you. jfCnow your people before yoti tie up with paper mill stJtk, and be sure they are a Jlart of the trust, for oth erwise you will find your plflnt idle and no market foj your product. ANKERS WHO ARE t SLIPPING AVe have read with not a lilfle interest the Oregon i V(jter's tirade on the new banking movement in Ore-' gun, which is patterned after the California get-rich- i quick bankers movement. Naturally, we think of Ed- j ltor Chapman as one who has reached the age when he flies off a little hastily, but nevertheless, he is more than half right in his con tention. !This idea of a bank in a twenty-four hour period breathing a 100 per cent in flation into its stock simply because it has hooked up with a Wallingford or a Julian, is sheer bunk. Bank stocks are the near est stabilized of any busi nea concern. Every bank must make its report to the state or nation. It is an open book to the public as to what its earnings have been and what its stock is worth. No breathing values into bank stock over night cah be done and made to t'Jck. It just can't be done. California is now experiencing- a slump that any san6 person kneflrwarnom- ingr. Some of its banks chain ed up together and then their stock went heaven ward. But the earnings re corded in the statements j justified no such marked ad vance. What has happened? The inevitable. They are soaring down, nowadays, to where they belong. We had always thought that speculation might oc cur in anything but bank stocks. But we have lived to see the day when even bank stocks were subject to the inflation of good prop aganda. The sooner we get rid of such a condition, the sooner will American people keep their feet on the earth and refuse to be parties to the promotion end of financial institutions.
