Rome and Village

ROME. Nov. 2. (United News)
The century-old alliance between
the people of Rome and the eltisena
of tbe little ' town of VHorchlano,
which dates back to the time, of the
republic, has been reconsecrated
this year by a special act of the
governor of Rome.
As jar back as the 13 th century, '
the townsfolk of Vltorchlano were
accustomed to send to Rome every
year 12 "faithful men" in memory
of the age-old tradition of friend
ship dating back to long before the
coming of the Caesars. '
Every year the 12 "faithful men
stood guard at the capitol for
couple of days, dressed ' In their
picturesque mediaeval costumes.
In 1871. after the creation of
Italian unity, ' the custom, which
had lasted over six centuries, -was
discontinued, but : this year Gov
ernor Cromonssi, in answer to a
petition of the people of VHor
chlano, and mindful of "the new
Italic greatness," has permitted 'the
continuation of the old tradition.
He has, moreover, ' Instituted ' a
schola'rsblp st the University of
Rome for one student annually from
Vltorchlano, . .. . . : .
