News) Striving for the suppres
sion of crime by assessing maxi
mum sentences against law viola
tors, a policy widely advocated In
New York City recently, has re
ceived strong impetus with the pun
ishment dealt out Friday to seven '
bandits who received sentences ag
gregating 200 years, the longest
terms the law allowed.
Judge James M. Banrett sentenced
the five "cry baby bandits" to
serve terms of from 1H to 35
Tears in Sing Sing prison. One
of their number, Leo Hecker. a
second offender, received at least
25 years. -
