Ride 'en
And Weep Over
An old retired cowboy was telling the rea
sons he had never run for" office in Klamath
county.
"Not me the old political horse is one 1
never want to ride," he said. "And what s
.more, I don't see anyone else around here
that's staying put in likely fashion."
It is almost the fact. With the exception
f a few judgeships and county offices, where
merit has maintained men in office, the other
" political mounts are hard to ride. Riders, are
constantly taking the bumps, some of them
before they get a foot in the stirrup.
Why this state of affairs? Are good rid
ers scarce?
Klamath, city and county, is going to need
real men in the saddle during the months and
years to come. . Too many ragged ends are
found costly. Horses and riders trip on them '
constantly. There is sad evidence of a poor
show. . . -
The public, astride the corral fence, turns
its weary eyesaway. It cannot arouse itself
over the spectacle of a rider slipping and pull
ing a frazzled, slab-sidded, fuzzy tailed polit
ical nag down in the dust on top of him.
More Work,
Unselfish Effort, Europe's Real Hope
European statesmen have expressed the
belief that they see in France an opportunity
for another dictator. They aver also that
Europe is entering into a period of dictator-
' ships that will endure for a generation, per
haps more. With France lining up" on the dic
tatorship government there would be formed
' in all probability a league of European dic
tators, with Mussolini and the others, in a con
solidation which may even produce other .
dictators. .
It is not likely that the people of Europe
care so much what form of government they
labor under. Filled purses, filled cupboards
and funds ready for the landlord will tend to
insure a peaceable frame of mind for the peo
ple, no matter whether it be a dictator or what
who does the ruling of government.
Peace, hold those who forsee the dictator
ship form of government, will not serve to
turn men's minds from politics. More work
and less politics and it is almost a foregone
conclusion that conditions in Europe will im
prove. 4

Judge Stadter of Portland imposed a fine
I of $500 and six months' imprisonment for
cruelty to animals, in the case of a man drag
ging a collie dog to death behind his automo
bile. Such a sentence will bring him to an
understanding that even a dumb brute has a
right to be killed without unnecessary cruelty.
