Harvesting Time
Advertisers Ccr.t.ring On Settlement
Following closely upon the railway activi
ties in and around Klamath Falls, which has
attracted wide attention throughout America
and in some parts of the British Isles and Eur
ope, by reason of mention made concerning
wide areas of as yet undeveloped land, comes
announcement that an organized advertising
campaign for more settlers in the west "is being
undertaken by transcontinental railways.
With adjournment of Southern Pacific
traffic representatives, who convened for the
purpose of discussing settlement problems of
the west, it was announced recently that
among the advertising schemes of those rail
officials was included not only settlers, but
tourist and industrial development of the Pa
cific northwest.
.During the meeting those representatives
gathered from far parts of the world, inform
. ed those assembled that attention had been
brought to bear on the Pacific northwest more
than any other section of the country. They
used the expression that the Pacific northwest
was attracting world-wide attention. These
men know whereof they speak. It is in the
ordinary every-day regime of their business
life.
' , Announcement by them of an organized
concentration toward developing the north
west would indicate that Klamath county and
this city might reasonably expect to benefit in
no small measure in the harvest of progress
which is bound to follow in coming years.

Florida Mecca for
Reports that the so-called boom of Florida
lands, is the result of a desire on part of Am
ericans to get something for little or nothing,
appears to be repudiated somewhat by the
class of people who are buying in the southern
state. Mostly, if railway ticket agents' rec
ords count for anything, these people are most
' ly that class of businessman who has gathered
together a surplus of cash which he wishes to
invest in furtherance of physical comfort. In
other words, a great majority of the buyers of
Florida property are purchasing not in the
light of an investment, but rather as a place
wherein to spend a brief period away from the
chill blasts of northern winters.
True, there are possibly a number of in
vestors, but these will soon drop off as de
mand slumps with the settlement of districts
attractive to the man seeking winter recrea
tion. Some of the investors will lose, some
will gain, but the fact appears evident that the
well-to-do and rich home builder, and not the
investor, is responsible for the rapid sales of
'real estate in Florida. It is no poor man's
country, and those with but a few thousand
dollars may not hope to do anything with such
a sum there.

Dinner Stories
He had opened up fish mar

painted of which he wa very
proud. It read: "Fresh Fish for

"What did you put In the word
'fresh' for? "said his first custom
er. "Von wouldn't sell them If
they weren't fresh, would you?"
He painted out the word, leav
ing Just "Fish for Sulo Here."
"Why do you say 'here'?" asked
his second customer. "You're not
selling them anywhere else, are
you?"
So he rubbed out the word
"here."
"Why use 'for sale'?" asked the
nert customer. "You wouldn't
have fish here unless they were
for sale, would you?"
So he rubbed out everything but
the word "Fish," remarking:
"Well, nobody can find fault
with that sign now, anyway."
A moment later another cus
tomer camo in.
"I don't see what's the use In
having that sign 'Fish' up there."
said he, "when you can smell 'em
a block away."
And that's why tho fish market
