Following a heavy vote, said to be greater than any bal
lot cast for a one-issue election in many a year, Z. J.
Powell, of this city, was yesterday elected councilman for
the second ward, by a plurality of 83 votes.
Final returns gave Powell 218, Smith 133, Lyle 133.

coast automobile thief and gunman,
staged a spectacular escape from
a house here late tonight, after he
had been surprised and cornered
