just what form cf procedure Mayor God
dard contemplates as a result of a severe quiz
zing given him by members of the city council
during Monday night's session is a matter of
mild interest to the community at large, or at
least those familiar with the situation.
- The city's chief executive, if reports be
true, it appears engaged an engineer for Klam
ath Falls. The latter official's duties are mani
fold. Chiefly, however, he is more or less di
rectly responsible for affixing a status of tax
levies cn which are based assessments for city
improvements.
In the natural course of events the state of
Oregon has provided that such officials should
pas3 an examination, a test given city engin
eers by a state board of men well qualified, or
supposedly so, to undertake such examina
tions. It is presumed, but presumed only, that
Mayor Goddard knew such a law existed and,
knowing it, violated the statute in hiring a
man not legally qualified for the position of
city engineer.
Certain interested parties may be inclined
to know why. Ergo, they may take exception
to this sort of procedure in a way not compat
ible with the general legal peace of the com
munity. Of course the mayor may be right and the
state wrong.
Then again the state may be right and the
mayor wrong.
Motorists of Klamath Falls and county
will welcome the establishment here of a
branch office of the Oregon Motor association,
which is affiliated with the A. A. A., the na
tional body. This is but another nail in the
structure of progressivenes3 now rearing itself
in our community and district. The chamber
of commerce is to be congratulated on secur
ing this added convenience to the motor
traveler in Klamath county.
Chamber of commerce board of directors,
in regular meeting assembled Tuesday noon,
declared favorably, although informally, on
a bond issue for improvement of the city's
sanitary system. Also it was mentioned that
street lighting and streets should be included
in work upon which certain portions of the
proposed bond issue should be expended. De
parting for the moment into the slang vernac
ular of the street, permit us to opine: "We'll
say so."
Secretary Mellon has submitted his pro
posed tax plan before congress. His plan was
turned in to the august body of law makers
Iwithout the usual form of label accompanying
such measures. Still what's in a label. Peo
ple are more generally interested in newspaper
comment on the bill, which states that it
"offers some relief to individuals, and consid
erable to business." That will help a little.
