Mayor Vetoes Again
The mayor's veto statement, re
garding the Lake Ewauna conces
sion, was in part, as follows:
"I am returning disapproved, that
certain resolution passed at the reg
ular meeting September 8, by the
council. In which the1 Sawmill En
gineering and Construction com-
pany la granted the right to build a
railroad track along and near the
eaat shore of Lake Ewauna
. -"This resolution would permit the
Sawmill Engineering and Construc
tion company to build railroad
tracks near the east shore of Lake
Ewauna from the property of the
Big Lakes Box company to a point
near the south end of Payne alley.
"Such a railroad would make It
practically Impossible for any com
peting railroad to build tracks to
serve the mills and factories along
this lake. Thus It would give a
monopoly to the owners of this so
called Industrial spur.
Open Town For Railroads
"I believe that this 'Industrial
spur la - being paid for and being
built at the instance of one of the
great railroad systems which Is try
ing to keep out all competing roads.
Furthermore, to my mind, It is only
a subterfuge to build this spur so
that, later, It can be turned Into a
commercial track that can be con
nected to the property owned by this
railroad on the west side of Lakej
Ewauna. My reasons for so think- j
ing are the various statements made
by Robert E. Strahorn to the park'
board and to the common council."
The mayor, In hlB statement. In
sisted that a "common user" clause
should be Inserted In any agreement
made with any railroad.
', "1 hold that every citizen from
owe it to all the unborn children of
the ages yet to come. I therefore
veto the resolution." -
Considerable routine business was
transacted by the council at .Its ses
sion last night.
