It' has been aald that to become a'
mother la more dangernua than to
be a soldier In a front line trench.
While this la somethin of an ex
aggeration (particularly n states
like Ori'Run, teliwa the people live
under good contlltlonn) It does re
mind us that motherhood Is a much
I more lungeroun undertaking than It
ha any right to be. In 1914. In
()rcon. 103 mothers lout their lives
; In giving birth to children. It Is
certain that a large proportion of
these deaths were unnecessary, and
would not have occurred If the
proper precautions had been taken.
During the same year, Infants
died. Many of them could hsvo been
saved If their mothers had had a
batter understanding of Uieir care,
especially daring alcknem... Educa
tion, of mothers and -niolher-to-be
would save many lives both their
own and their children's. For this
reason, the bureau of child hygiene
of the Oregon state board of health
has prepared a serlea of letters to
prospective mothers, whkh are sent
monthly before the baby comes, and
for fonr months thereafter.
