A good daily newspaper is put first by the win
ner of a contest conduct d by the General Federation
of Women's Clubc cn th? question, "How Can a Fam
ily Best Spend an Annual Budget for Reading Mat
ter?" The winner, a Masachusetts woman within the
aura of Boston influence, selected a list of famous
books as a starter for a library to be accumulated out
of an annual budget, but above and ahead of them
all she put a GOOD daily newspaper, with the em
phasis on the "good!"
We have not been given the reasoning by which
she put a good daily newspaper above Dante's "Div
ine Comedy," Palgrave's "Golden Treasury,"
Bry'ce's "American Commonwealth" or Hart's "Am-

She saw clearly that the daily newspaper is the
individual's prime contact with the world of today.
Only by it can one keep in touch with life in any ade
quate way. It is the one medium by which one can
see and feel what mankind is doing. Without its aid
modern social intercourse becomes impossible, busi
ness is paralyzed, democracy ceases to function.
The daily newspaper each day presents the stu
pendous comedy of the whole world. It traces the
never-ceasing epics and idylls of life. It pictures the
day-to-day onward straggle not only of this common
wealth but of the others throughout the world with
whose destinies we are more and more indissolubly
bound. It records the history that is making now and
broadens the opportunity of each one of us to take
Books are necessaiy and vital. They select;
they have time for ripening; they are the treasury of
accumulated knowledge and wisdom. But the news
paper is the window open on life, a window on a
high mountain top from which all the world can be
seen. Without it one is shut away from knowledce
of his fellows. b
In olden times the man who wished to cut him
self off from the world retired into a cave as a her
mit. To secure the same effect in this day one has
only to go without a daily newspaper.
